Forums - Sony Discussion - Why didn't Sony hype their wiimote at CES this year?

Isn't CES about new and cutting edge technology?

I'm not saying anything about the quality of the wands, but the tech they're using isn't anything special from what I can see.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the wands will do great things for the PS3, but there's no reason to show them off at a tech show when there's really not much impressive about them themselves.

not exactly.

while game consoles maybe be introduced, they are not the main focus since they are other conventions for that

First off; the Sony Wiimote?

Second; maybe they realize its not going to be the second coming of christ. If they want it to be popular with the crowd outside of Vgchartz users and those like us, CES hyping won't be much use to them seeing as CES isn't exactly the epitome of casual coverage and insight.

It's the exact same thing in theory, it just adds more accuracy to the sensing. It basically is a Wii-mote with a camera instead of a sensor bar. Why should we use Sony's arbitrary rebranding of a device to refer to it when we have been using the device already, for years?

Also, Sony should have at LEAST rebranded it. WTH? We are still calling it the Sony wand? At least MS PR is smart enough to give their thing a name, so people can talk about it.

Also, I think that the Sony Wii-mote not being shown at CES this year is sending a very clear message:

Sony is doing the Wand thing, so they won't be left out of the motion-control race. It was a reaction to Natal, and it's not really a focus of the company going forward. I wouldn't be surprised if you saw a LOT less support for this from Sony than either of the other companies are throwing behind their motion control devices. This is a backburner second string project for Sony, or else they would show it more prominantly. Either that, or they are racing to get it finished and in a workable state.

How is the Wand a reaction to Natal?  Especially when the tech behind the Wand had been in development since the PS2 era.  If anything Natal and the increased interest of Sony in the wand tech is in response to the Wiimote.  You say that the Wand is, in theory, the same thing as the Wiimote.  I do agree with this, as it achieves the same result with different tech.  But couldn't the same thing be said of Natal and PSEye, as the same result is achieved, just with different tech?

As far as CES goes, as many have said, Sony has more than just the Wand to focus on.  Also I think it's a wise business decision to wait to hype the crap out of the Wand just a month or two before launch.  Now MS has been making a big push to hype Natal over a year before its release, and I think ultimately that might backfire a little.  They are never going to match the hype that happened after E3, with all the press and awards.  Speaking of awards, why in 2009 did we start giving out awards for what might be or could happen?  First Obama wins a Nobel based on a couple of weeks in office, then Natal wins all these 2009 awards when it doesn't come out until 2010.  Just saying.

Because they don't have a WiiMote.

4 ≈ One

Why hype something that could only ever be just a peripheral this gen? It won't be free, it won't sell to even 1/4 of the user base.

MS is the one making a huge gambel hyping Natal. It could sell gang busters and still be a flop because it splinters install base.

A warrior keeps death on the mind from the moment of their first breath to the moment of their last.

Well with Natal, it's planned to be used on PC's as well as the Xbox 360 and I would say that's really why you saw it at CES. If it wasn't going to be used on PC's, I'm sure they would have done the same and held it off till E3.

Honestly i think they may be leaving it for the PS4 cause the PS3 is like a fad right now : ( , just look at the Game Cube and their original thought peripheal Wii mote, it is just the same, but diferent : )

Kidding ! XD XD XD

I just think their strategy is to offer it with the key software that explodes it at the fullest so they can get the most out of the media. Just look at the Wii Mote and their very simple Wii Sports, that´s what they are looking for and as Nintendo, they are going to keep it secret so Nintendo or M$ wouldnt copy it. (Nintendo wont do it, believe me, they are just a step, not, may be a whole mile ahead ja ja ja ja mauajajajajajjaja muajajajajajjajajaja )

They are focused on the 3D stuff right now.

I also think that both Natal and the Wand will both fail or succeed, together. Either the casual audience is attracted to both, being in HD consoles, or they simply keep buying Wiis.

That's right, just one "d"

In b4 "it's addict"

I think you misunderstood me or I'm misunderstanding you.

I'm not saying a thing about game consoles, I'm talking about new technology.

The Sony Wand isn't new or interesting technology. That's like arriving at the show and trying to show off some minotor that someone else has already been producing for a year but yours might be an inch or so bigger.  whoop-dee-do.

The wands are not what is cool, they are nothing really new and nothing really special, it's the games that have the potential to be cool.

This is what I think, Sony is going to delay the wand so they can make sure that all the games that come with it are top notch, and good quality, it will also give them some time to hopefully make a nun chuck like device, if they release it close to Natal it could take a lot of steam away from NATAL if done right.
Of course I could be wrong and they may still release it spring/summer, but we shall see.

it's the future of handheld

Well natal is a clone of eyetoy.
