Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Greenberg: "Millions of Natals in Consumers' Homes this Holiday"

Do you want to use it with those games though?

You can split it up like this: -

1. Games that will never use Natal

2. Games that only use Natal

3. Games that have extra features/abilities if you have Natal, but are playable without it

I don't won't to be forced to buy it and in the case of option 3, I don't want people with Natal to have an advantage over me if I choose not to buy it. That's where I think they have to be careful with it.

""Millions" of Natal units in a single holiday season is certainly an ambitious goal and one usually out of reach of most video game peripherals; however, Project Natal will be released with more than a year of hype behind it, not unlike the highly anticipated Wii Fit."

RUBBISH.

This quote is confusing consumer demand for hype. Pokemon had virtually no hype before it was released. Halo 3 and GTA IV were arguably the most hyped games of all time and did not sell as much as Pokemon or Wii Fit.

Wii Fit was successful because there was demand for interactive fitness software and Nintendo tapped it. What consumer demand is Natal filling? Hype can make a success but only consumer demand can create a phenomenon like Wii Fit.

lol, pokemon had no hype??? It is arguably the most watched anime in the world. Maybe you didn't hype about it, but millions of kids have.

let's face it, how many people are still playing Wiifit after first month?

compare GTAIV with the above 2 games is not fair, GTAIV sold very well.

Well, I'm expecting Halo: Reach to fall under the first category and Fable III under the third. I'd be a bit shocked if it got bundled with Halo and even more so if they didn't do some sort of bundle with Fable. I don't think there will be an "advantage" in Fable III perse, in fact, I really think Natal interaction will consist of using the "touch" feature Molyneux was talking about (which could also be done via controller) and maybe a few other things. Not anything game changing, but tweaking the experience a little bit. Of course, that's all speculation, and who am I really to try to fathom what's going through Peter Molyneux's head?

Look at the Wii itself. I remember reading the specs and thinking "it sounds shit". Then I saw the Wii Remote for the first time and thought "WTF?". As soon as I saw the first Wii Sports demo I knew it was gonna sell millions though. Natal on its own isn't what's going to sell it. It's the software/features that are possible because of it that will sell it.

If Halo: Reach falls under the first category, then bundling it with Natal is utterly pointless. You need to buy Natal and have a game (or games) with it that can show off what it does, so when you first plug it in and use it, you're wowed. If Fable 3 uses Natal features, then a Natal bundle would work as long as it's not the only option for buying the game, but to really sell it they need killer apps/games bundled with it that we've not seen before that only work with Natal. I'm sure they will provide this though.

Well they need something, they are losing momentum and at the moment it looks like PS3 could catch them.

No matter how things turn out at Natal's launch, it will sure be interesting! But I think he might be getting a little ahead of himself here, but that's his job!

Yeah, like I said, I'm not expecting a Halo: Reach/Natal bundle. I'm pretty sure Fable III is confirmed to have some Natal features, it's just that those features surprisingly have not been revealed at this time. Maybe next month, when the game is shown, we'll see something.
