Forums - Gaming Discussion - CES 2010: MS's Greenberg: 3D gaming? Not any time soon

It seems like 3D is the big focus here at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show. It's nearly impossible to miss the demonstration displays and the weirdos with the crazy glasses on here at the show. It's all anyone is talking about. Microsoft's Xbox Director of Product Management, Aaron Greenberg, also noticed this, but it doesn't sound like he feels that 3D is going to change gaming anytime soon.

"I think there's a lot of questions, to be honest," Greenberg told us in a meeting here at CES. "3D is great in the theater, but for the living room? I think we're a long ways away from that."

While the Xbox 360 currently supports 3D with games like Avatar, Greenberg points to things like required sitting distances and the need for glasses as potential hurdles.

He adds: "If the consumers want it? Fine."

"In the theater there's nothing between you and the experience, but as you have other people in the room and other people walking by, well, it's not the same experience."

I think TVs will be the biggest hurdle for 3D gaming. I sure don't want to buy a new one. It is definitely neat though.

I'm using 3D right now....the entry price is really not as high as it sounds.

CURRENTLY PLAYING:  Warframe, Witcher 2

I bet Greenberg's saying this just because Sony has the upper hand on implementing 3D gaming to consoles lol, but maybe he is right.

In next gen I believe both MS and Sony will be full ready for 3D though. I hope!

he is right. 3D gaming is something for the next gen. It won't be mainstream in the next 5 years. Look where BluRay came from and the DVD is still outselling it. There are just a handful TV stations that actually broadcast HDTV. And if they do, you have to pay for most of them. (in Europe)

3D is the next big thing, but not for gaming untill 2012 or whenever the next gen starts.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

i guess they need to downplay 3D gaming as much as they can so that they can promote NATAL more without "3D" gaming as a distraction. Nice one! lol. I think it will be neat, and I don't really mind wearing those glasses if it means a really good implementation of 3D-Gaming.

I heard even Gran Turismo 5 will support/play in 3D. Imagine a 3-D driving simulator with your glasses, and your steering wheel in front of your tv. its going to be definitive. haha.

End of 2010 Predictions (Original Prediction Made: Jan. 1, 2010---Revised April 1, 2010---Revised Again July 1, 2010---Revised Again on Nov. 1, 2010)

PS3: 46 MIL (April Revision: 44 MIL, July Revision 43 MIL, Nov. Revision 45MIL)

360: 44 MIL (April Revision: 46 MIL, July Revision: 48 MIL, Nov. Revision 49MIL)

WII: 82 MIL (Apr. Revision: 84 MIL, Jul. Revision: 82 MIL, Nov. Revision: 82MIL)

THE MUST BUY LIST of 2010: Gran Turismo 5

THE BOUGHT LIST of 2010: White Knight Chrnociles, Heavy Rain, Final Fantasy 13, God of War 3, Modnation Racers, Sports Champions

Sony may be pushing it right now, but they will likely not benefit from their early entry in 3D. The TV is going to be the biggest hurdle. Even HDTV's only have a 46% adoption rate and look how long that's taken. 3DTV's will probably NEVER have even that kind of adoption.

Personally I love 3D and look forward to its eventual implementation. But I just don't see it being any time soon for reasons in addition to what Greenberg stated.

Please, PLEASE don't make this about console wars, folks.

Does anyone have any information about 3D and eyestrain? I already have head aches sometimes when I'm sitting in front of my PC too long or if I'm gaming for too long, I would hate it if 3D made this worse.

They're probably waiting to see if 3D gaming takes off or not and then join in next gen

Eyestrain is def a problem with 3d today. Therefore I think 3dtv's without glasses is the only thing that has potential to make 3d mainstream.
