I've been using Linux since 2004.

Right now I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed in a dual-boot with PC-BSD 7.1.1.

I'm also quite familiar with Fedora, Puppy Linux, Mint, OpenSolaris, ReactOS, Yellow Dog, and various other free operating systems.

I guess I could have mentioned this before, my webserver uses CentOS. :D Though, with respect to servers, Linux distros are the majority, so I guess it isn't really anything special in that case.

Used it a bit over the years. It was a bit of fun but I don't see myself being converted away from mac osx as all the tools I use for film work are on that operating system. I still prefer both windows and osx but its perfectly fine to use and gets better each time I give it a go.

I can't ever see its niche status ever really dissapating. Too many times I've read people proclaim that this is the year of the Linux desktop! The reality is I don't think it'll ever happen.

I use linux because my friend installed it for me and I managed to master it.

Along with my hate for MS and Apple has too shitty software for my taste

Honestly, do JRPG makers even realize how hard it is to save the world? That shit is impossible!

I use Linux since 2005 although my knowledge is no that great.

I started using Red Hat just because is was installed in my PC. In 2006 I moved to Mandriva for University projects. Back in 2008 I installed OpenSuse in my computer. And now I'm using Ubuntu.

Why don't you make like a tree and get out of here?

I've always considered partitioning one of my HDDs and throwing in a Linux install, which distro should I go for?

I've done this.

It starts off as a lot of fun and a good learning experience.  You go through and you play with KDE/Gnome, try out lots of different toys via the package managers (RPM/APT/etc), and more.

However the problem with dual-booting is that you have the option of windows.  If you want to play PC games, you reboot to windows.  If you want to work a third-party software, you reboot to windows.   If you want nice font-smoothing, you reboot to windows.  Essentially, you will (or at least I did) come to the realization that everything you want/need can be done on Windows whereas Linux... really has nothing to offer beyond headaches in getting hardware working that has great windows support and a collection of freeware that often times has window ports or superior alternatives.

Using different operating systems is a good experience though, regardless of the outcome.

I use EEE Ubuntu on my EEE pc.

I would contribute to Linux (I know C/C++ along with a few other languages), but the Air Force really doesn't leave me with enough extra time to do that.

Debian user and indie dev here. I use XP for gaming and linux for everything else. Why? I find linux much better in just about everything, but I still have to use windows to play games thanks to DirectX.

Heh someone's been around. That reminds me, I had Yellow Dog on my PS3. Not enough RAM though, not quite the fastest thing around.

I use Ubuntu. Installed it on an old laptop to give it a whole new lease of life. I love it.

I also have a XP Desktop which i tried to install Ubuntu on through a partition, but couldn't get the display to work - I use a 29inch HD TV as a monitor. Shame, it would be awesome.

Any ideas on how i can get it to work? Nvidia Gforce 6600 and 29inch HD display.
