I don't understand why you are saying what you are saying.
My point is Galaxy would have sold better if it had a big multiplayer portion. That would have drove the expanded audience to it.
Basically, more people consider MKWii, NSMBWii, etc as better games as they have a feature that allows more gameplay options.
Personally, I like all three about the same as I also focus on mastering the single player experience, however, the multiplayer makes those two see far more playtime in my house.

The funny thing is that I felt Galaxy to be easier than 64.
Mario Galaxy was a fantastic game for the likes of us, but for the mainstream audience the nauseating, planet-spinning gameplay is too much.
I'm wondering what they can do for the sequel to make it sell better
I think a lot of it has to do with immediate competition from other Nintendo products. Namely Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros Brawl, and Wii Fit. I think if the game had a longer slot of being out without those games releasing (at least a good 6 months) then it could have sold better than it did. I think the whole 2d vs 3d is most prominent in Japan but in America and Europe the differences probably aren't as big as we make it out to be.
Thus looking forward to Super Mario Galaxy 2 I think this game can open pretty high and as long as there isn't another big Mario game or casual game (Zelda won't cause a drop in sales of it) in the immediate future it should be able to sell well over a longer period of time.
But hey Galaxy is still selling even now and should end its lifecycle with some very respectable sales.

The poster wondered why it didin't do like Mario 64. Not like Mario kart or NSMBW.

Even if Galaxy had multiplayer and NSMB:Wii didn't, NSMB:Wii would still outsell it. Every SMB platformer has sold well more than every 3D Mario in history.
A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.
Also SMG is not a masterpiece. As people here have mentioned, it's just got to do with the gameplay and limited multiplayer (it's not even multiplayer. It's really crap co-op).
Of course it won't. NSMBWii and Kart are so user friendly, anyone would pick it up and play. With no background, some newcomers may be even put off by Galaxy.
I really hope it sells some 10 mil, I don't expect it to outsell 64, though.

Take that back!
