To be honest I think lack of bundling plays a part. I don't know if it's different in other parts of the world but melee and kart have bundles in the UK, but not galaxy.

I agree that this is the more interesting issue. Mario Kart and 2D Mario offer very different gaming experiences that may appeal more to the masses than 3D Mario. So what did Galaxy do wrong that makes it less popular than Super Mario 64?
Some of 64's popularity can be attributed to being the first 3D Mario - a brand-new experience. But I don't think that's the whole story...
Galaxy is single player (primarily) and therefore doesn't drive the expanded audience as much as MKWii and NSMBWii do.
lol mario looks niche when compared to other mario games. 3-D mario games never had a huge game that mde it on the map. Super Mario Bros sold 40 million. That was the game that made 2-D mario games huge. That's all 3-D mario needs. This game is the 2nd highest 3-D mario game. Though 643-D
Highest peak 2-D
Well, it's to hardcore I guess... But I agree that it's a masterpiece and one of the best games ever made!

galaxy sold more than sunshine. The poster is saying why it didin't hit higher sales like 10 million. Not 20 million
Sunshine might have dented expectations slightly for Galaxy as well.
Not that Sunshine wasn't an excellent game.
It will be interesting to see how Galaxy 2 sells in comparison. Obviously most people would think it will sell less because it is a direct sequel, but it is the heir to one of the best games ever made... so we'll see.
Because my father and sister hate it and can't play it!
But New Super Mario Wii* they love it!
That's why!
*The same goes for Wii Sports and Mario Kart!
Galaxy isn't all that casual friendly.
Rol spoke on this but it has too many cutscenes, a drawn-out intro, and it's probably the most counter-intuitive Mario on the Wii as far as newcomer-friendly goes. Only someone who played and finished 64 or Sunshine would tolerate half the garbage it pulls.
Mario Kart Wii is simple. You race, you win or lose. Just about anyone could get that.
Also, while Galaxy is a fantastic 3D experience, New Super Mario Bros. Wii lends itself much better to newcomers to the series via Super Guide and 4 player cooperative play.
Pixel Art can be fun.
