I agree that this is the more interesting issue. Mario Kart and 2D Mario offer very different gaming experiences that may appeal more to the masses than 3D Mario. So what did Galaxy do wrong that makes it less popular than Super Mario 64?
Some of 64's popularity can be attributed to being the first 3D Mario - a brand-new experience. But I don't think that's the whole story...
