Forums - Microsoft Discussion - MS: Xbox 360 has sold 39m units

LOL that both selnor and trios quote the exact same line and they basically assume different things.

Selnor goes for "vgchartz is off" (backing up his earlier statement that Balmer said it was "in homes" (which he apparently didn't say based on the quote provided).

Trios goes for "that's almost certainly shipped", although he doesn't pick sides :)

39m in homes? How many in the bin though? Would be interesting to know how many are actually working.

BTW was it not The Source who claimed that the slim would only sell for 1 week because it was just phat PS3 owners upgrading.

Yeah good sales from MS.

I don't believe they have sold over 39 million units. They couldn't have, otherwise the xbox 360 would have outsold the playstation 3 on a monthly basis since the launch of the playstation 3 slim.

The key word is shipped, when MS says 39 "sold" that's strictly to all retailers WW.  I'm not sure of PS3's numbers at Sony's CES but they'd say the same thing like 33 or 34 PS3's have been sold which invariably mean shipped to retailers as well.

I guess ballmer stretched the truth about worldwide sales. When big bosses/employers talk about sales, they should talk about how many units they've sold to customers, not retailers. He should be ashamed for lying. Hes more intelligent than to deceive others for accumulative xbox 360 sales.

I'm not trolling! But, is it possible he is counting RROD too?

every time.

I thought it was strange too that there were 2.4 M or so units on shelves somewhere, but now that I think about it, it makes a lot of sense. 360 really underperformed this season where every retailer probably thought they were going to break their previous year. So yeah, there probably is a huge stock pile in warehouses somewhere.

Weren't there reports of PS3's and 360's selling out all holiday season? Does it make sense that there would be that many on store shelves?

I just don't see why there is such a big controversy here. All of us know that there is no way to track the actual numbers of sales for any of these consoles. Everything is an estimate. But the most accurate numbers that we can get would come from the console manufacturers themselves. They not only know what they ship out but also what retailers are ordering to replenish their stock as well.

So when the CEO of a company states to an international audience that there are 39 million 360's in homes worldwide, we should not just blow it off. When Sony has a CES timed press release stating they sold in excess of 3.8 million PS3's over the holiday, we should not just blow it off.

They're the best numbers we have, folks.

Not really a fair assumption to make since you have nothing to back it up. I disagree for the reasons that generally production line->consumer on most xboxes at the moment in the UK at least is around 2 months, check MFR dates of a sprinking of new xboxes and you will see that's roughly correct. The PS3 Slim sales boom occured in september onwards, it was obvious from the get go that sales were not going to be incredible for MS as opposed to xmas before from that time. My point in all this is, if there are 2.4 million consoles sitting around the average MFR date should be beginning of november!

I'm better than you because I made my own. I'm cuter tooooooooo.
