I didn't know it was illegal to hack and mod them. I know it's illegal to copyright infringe though.

Its only illegal to copyright infringe, but I think modding is okay. I may be wrong.

Odd. Future. Wolf. Gang. Kill. Em. All. OFWGKTA Don't give a fuck!

Fuck Steve Harvey. FREE EARL!

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be the GREATEST game EVER made!!!

I'd take a bullet for Square-Enix!

You're misinformed modifying your console in anyway while it may void your warranty is not illegal. The only illegal activity really connected with it is software piracy and frankly there is a lot of gray area around that and it can be twisted to fit many different things. There are plenty of legal activities that come from modding, like the fact that making a personal backup copy of a game you own and playing it is not illegal and it protects your original game from damage or homebrew applications that add more function to your console.

I personally hate being locked out of my own hardware. First thing I did to my Sony Ericsson was unlock it so that I could use it with anyone anywhere I wanted. That is also one, of MANY, reasons why I'm ever buying anything made by crApple.

According to this article, it seems that modding your console is not illegal in itself. However, it violates the usage agreement (in the case of Microsoft) and can have negative repercussions from the manufacturer. I am guessing that other manufacturers have similar clauses in their usage agreement; It will surely void your warranty.

you can do anything with you hardware. You just can't play games that you don't legally own.

I was wondering how there could be a law restricting your use of a hardware that you own.

BUT

it would seem that i was misinformed then.

I'm not sure about the US, but one man was recently convicted for it in the UK. Interestingly, it seems that the act of modifying a console itself is illegal, rather than modifying it for the purpose of playing pirated games; that means that one is no longer allowed to modify a console to play homebrew or imported games. It seems that Spain is an exception to this interpretation (probably NSFW).

I´ve read the same thing happening in the US and thats why I asked the question, spain is not the exception its UK that is the exception in this case and if I remember correcly the guy in hte UK also had lots of copyright material so it wasnt solely for modifying his console.

The spainn case is pretty well known by now and I think something similar happened in France.

Edit: The first link brings me back to the question i had how in the hell can it be illegal to modify your console in any way?

If it´s illegal to modify your console then its not yours and you actually havent bought the thing but instead you have leased or rented the thing.
