3 reasons

1. Lack of support by Sony especially on 2008.
2. Lot of ports. PS2 to PSP? Wii to PSP? DS to PSP?
3. Piracy ( everyone who denies that are only fooling themselves ) It sure helps sell a lot of hardware but it became a double edge sword and really hurt Sony in the long run.

It's the mixture of those 3.

PS. PSP is not a failure selling 55 million ( still selling ) is not a failure. I really hope Metal gear and KH will invigorate it sale for one last push and PSP is still far from dead yet thanks to Japan.

If anything it was piracy that helped psp hardware sell.....it definitely wouldnt be at 55 million if there wasnt any piracy.

Going by this...Piracy helps the 360 get sales? Not saying that it doesn't help the PSP, but every console on the market is pretty much hackable.

The new PS3 Slim is unhackable by any logical extent, with the Original PS3 you could install an Operating System (Install other OS setting) and download games from Linux.

2010 Hardware Sales Predictions

Wii: 20m- Sales will drop, but not by much.

PS3: 13.5m- It sold 12m in 2009, its only common sense it will sell more this year.

Xbox 360: 11m- It sold 11m in 2008 and 2009, I think it will sell the same.

My Fanboy Speech...

Why do you have to make excuses to defend a product that you purchased, but that's the only connection you have to it, you don't make it, you don't lose or gain money on it. I don't see where all of the defensiveness comes in, there is no reason for you or anybody else to feel obligated to defend it. Now I would understand if one of you were a developer for the product and you slaved over said product only to hear somebody call it stupid or a piece of junk. But none of you developed it, none of you are mature enough to realize that. Choosing a product all comes down to preference, you chose said product because it is best for you. Simple as that!

What evidence do you have that it is a major cause?  Even the Ipod one of the most popular Personal media players on the market only made 48 million from gaming even though i believe it's growing faster than the PSP.   You don't need all the games in the world when you can search the internet, listen to music, watch videos etc.

I used to have a link the site traffic of the site that people used to network update their psp with custom firmware and their traffic was nothing amazing.

I am really confused on what were you trying to say here?

Since you ask for one.

Yeah that's what I said (bold part). Do you think Sony is happy that piracy helps sell hardwares especially the third parties? Piracy is like a virus slowly killing it's host. Look what happen at the software side. That's why it's a double edge sword.

The one who shot a person with a gun is called a killer, not a gun. How more obvious metaphor you need to finally stop blaming piracy in the first place? What caused piracy then? Rhetorical question as I believe it has been already answered by numerous people in this thread. //Not really saying it has been killed, that's overdramatization.

OP's perspective is flawed.

Check this out!

+1

The PSP is the most successful gaming dedicated (ie excluding iphone) portable that isn't made by Nintendo. I think it's sold 10x more than it's closest competition, if memory serves

Well done Sony

I am saying that Personal Media Devices would have a far lower software attach ratio than purely gaming machines because they offer far more entertainment options than just games(music, movies, internet, internet radio etc).

Even though Nintendo makes tons of cash they complain about piracy too.  That doesn't seem to affect their sales very much. Same with the 360(although with Live it makes it a slightly easier problem as they frequently drop the ban hammer).  Same with the PC.  I think Sony might be a little more vocal but i see no reason to believe that they suffer from piracy any greater than any other system.  As a matter of fact those numbers you have are smaller than any of the ones listed in the most pirated games in 09 as that honor belongs to 360 and Wii.

I don't have the link anymore but when i did the math based on the hits to the custom firmware update site i believe it was less than half a percent of the current install base at that time.  Even 10 times that wouldn't even be 5% of the install base.

Sony especially with the PSP needs to get awareness out there of games and stop thinking that they can place product in the market without advertising and it will sell.  And not just video game websites.  The people that see the game there are more likely to pirate as the average individual doesn't go to game sites to figure our and anticipate the latest titles. They ask the clerks at Games Stop.  They watch tv etc.

I am saying Sony sucks at letting consumers know what they have to purchase and that is probably a much bigger issue.  They advertise the hardware itself heavily and it sells. They don't advertise the games much and they don't sell...Hmmm i wonder why that is.

I wasnt argueing with your post , im just focusing on the piracy part and I do agree with you but....piracy was rampant on the ps2 and it still sold software.....piracy on the ds is also more rampant than compared to the psp and it still sold alot of software.

The point im trying to make is that the reality of this business is that there will eventually be piracy on your product but you cant make that into an excuse of why software isnt selling when other consoles software have had amazing success while dealing with piracy.

N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!!!
