Forums - Gaming Discussion - Pre - CES 2010 - 3D onslaught already begins

CES 2010 is 2 days away, however already we have news of 3D invading our living rooms.

1. IMAX, & Sony announce joint venture 3D TV network

http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/01/05/discovery-imax-sony-form-3d-television-channel/?hp

2. 100 inch 3D Laser TV (LCoS technology)

3. TDVision Systems and CyberLink Announce Full HD Stereoscopic Video Decoding Solution

http://www.forbes.com/feeds/businesswire/2009/12/30/businesswire133418994.html

My understanding of these stories -

1. 3D Tv channels are on the way in 2010

2. DLP/LCoS technology will most likely make a comeback using lasers because of 3D capability superiority over plasma and LCD

3. 2D movies will be able to be converted to 3D movies by average users soon

Can't wait to see what CES 2010 brings our way!

Well PS3 has absolutely nothing to do with 3D at this point.

Infact, as things stand, PS3 CAN NOT output 3D on non DLP screens. There may be a software update in the future which lets it do 120 hz but as things stand, PS3 can not output 120 hz to the TV.

PS3 (and xbox360) can do DLP 3d format as they use the checkerboard pixel pattern to fool the eye and still use 60 hz refresh rate.

And this is before we get in to the fact that in order to run a game like Resident evil 5 in 3D you need a GTX285 video card and a quad core intel CPU...both of which are way out of current gen consoles league.

All in all, I am most interested in the Sony CES conference as I really want to know how they plan to integrate 3D in to PS3.

Funny thing is... Samsung 450 series plasma is the only plasma in the world that supports 3D in 2009. It has the Vesa 3pin plug on the back necessary to sync with the shutter glasses like Nvidia 3D vision.

Its not a high end model at all. Infact, your wal mart may sell it already.

Everyone thank Avatar!

While its true that mainstream media took 3D in to consideration only after Avatar took off... 3D PC gaming has been pretty solid for a couple of years now.

Infact, I have canceled my 360 preorder of splinter cell and moved it to Alan Wake. Splinter Cell on PC in 3D sounds a little bit more attractive now that I have a videocard/processor that can run 1080p 3D.

I do thank Avatar though, as we may all be watching our favourite movies with pop out 3D fx soon.

Looks and sounds cool but it'll be quite a few years yet before we can afford a screen of any size worth mentioning. I can only imagine the starting prices of a first generation full 3D compatible TV around the 50 inch mark... *shudders*
