There are legitimate reasons for using the Homebrew channel, like playing imported games

I wonder if nintendo would agree with you there. Sony and the games developers deserve my hard earned cash.

Uh

Considering that you would need to buy the imported games, I'm sure they're okay with that part of the practice

what games do you have to import?

NMH is a game you would need to import if you are from Europe and dont want to play the gimped version.

U can use homebrew so you can play your games of sdcard, usb or harddrive

U can use your hhomebrew to make your wii a mediacenter and play dvd´s or mp3´s

There are loads of functions you can do when you installed homebrew like create channels for every game on your wiis system menu and many many other godies that you will never get if you dont have the Homebrew channel.

Guess i was one of the lucky ones with Homebrew channel that just had it safely removed by 4.2, and didn't brick or anything

But electronics are strange like that. Problems are not necessarily persistent, even when it looks like they should be.

No your not one of the lucky ones, Nintendo deliberatly made the update so it just removed some of the functions like homebrew without bricking the Wii, some brick anyway but thats the ones that play around with the wii system files.

If you follow the guides that are around its safe and if you back up your nand you can always restore your wii back to where it was so no risk there and update to 4.2 is safe and only removes the HB channel and stops a few of the hacking methods like the twilight hack.

nintendo made the wii as a games console, that is it. If you want your console to do everything get a ps3. Do you pay for the games that you put on the usb, sdcard??

A lot of people do, actually. I know there's at least one guy here who buys his games, then copies them to an external hard drive with a virtual disc loader so he doesn't have to switch discs.

hey thetonestarr, my advice to you is that you should "downgrade" your system menu, in doing so the downgrade tool uninstalls your current (corrupt) system files and install older (but uncorrupt) files, from Nintendo servers btw ;)

The way the Wii upgrades is incremental. files just get added, not replaced. so if you want to get rid of your corrupt files, you cant just upgrade to fix it. you can update again after you downgrade.

"Formatting" your Wii won't work either, when you "format" your Wii, you are actually just deleting messages, contacts and save files, NOT system menu files, your Wii doesn't go back to factory setting after formatting, It stays at the same system menu. if you tried formatting, you'd just stay at 4.2 system menu. so no use formatting your Wii.

Of course you should back up your Wii harddrive (the Wii's NAND) before doing any of this, like vaio suggested :)

'everything you said is true but you dont need to downgrade, if you follow the latest guides to upgrade to 4.2 you will have to replace the files that are not good with the NUS and once you have gone through the whole process you will be good to go.

Thats up to you if you want to pay or not, for me it was the best solution ever since my dvd drive broke for more then a year ago and I saved money from not needing to buy another wii.

This has nothing to do with stealing games at all, you can use it to play downloaded games but its not the main function or necesarry
