But electronics are strange like that. Problems are not necessarily persistent, even when it looks like they should be.

No your not one of the lucky ones, Nintendo deliberatly made the update so it just removed some of the functions like homebrew without bricking the Wii, some brick anyway but thats the ones that play around with the wii system files.

If you follow the guides that are around its safe and if you back up your nand you can always restore your wii back to where it was so no risk there and update to 4.2 is safe and only removes the HB channel and stops a few of the hacking methods like the twilight hack.
