I don't have any problems remembering where they are but if I'm telling someone how to do a move I'll often call the X button B or the circle button A, etc...

I never had a problem adapting. My mom does though. She can never remember which shape goes where and would much rather stick to the alphabet system.
I'll tell you what threw me off though. The 360 controller has the SNES naming scheme but did the buttons backwards. I screwed up so many times playing games because I was always going by the SNES scheme and not the Xbox one.

thats true i whenever i see green I know to hit triangle. and blue for X , however sqaure and circle are too close that i resort to shape.
CURRENTLY PLAYING: Warframe, Witcher 2
Only thing that messes me up is that the 360 and PS3 controllers both have an X and they're in different places. I screw up so many QTE's because of that crap.
Back when I first got my PS1 I used to get circle and square mixed up a lot, but I've got it down by now.
Now that I think about it, I screw up a lot. When I see A, I push X, and when I see X I push A. Because of the Playstation controller... But, when I'm playing on Genesis, I know the X button and have no hesitation in pushing it.. But, 360 controllers take me a while to get used to...
Kinda weird, considering me and my Dreamcast gets along just fine..
Funny! I'm playing the God of War collection right now, and I've died a billion times because I CANNOT remember the buttons for the quick-time events! I got offered easy mode 5 times so far LOL!
I really like the 360 face buttons because the whole button is the color, rather than it being black with the shape being colored. You can see a color out of your peripheral, and have an extra backup for memory. I have to say though, for the longest time, I didn't even know the Bumpers were there, a prompt would show up on the screen and flash "LB" and I'd grab the trigger and promplty die. The bumpers are awesome now that I'm used to them though, but that was a nasty learning curve.
I just want to yell this from the mountaintop though, CONTROLLERS MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE! Really, I am an old school Ninty fan who went to Sony in the PS/PS2 years, and now I prefer the 360 almost exclusively for the controller. Also, Mass Effect.
lol, how do you play video games... :p It takes about 2 seconds for me to memorize whatever controller I'm currently using.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to memorize a controller layout. I'm not trying to be mean but come on, if you could memorize ABXY why can't you memorize Square, X, O and Triangle? They're in the exact same positions.
