Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Error 74. Help

I am at my brother in laws and his 360 is getting a error 74. How serious is this. Is it repairable or is he looking at his new oversized paper weight. I feel bad for him... He used all his cmas money for a Wireless adapter, MW2, and a live card.

Any help would be appreciated. Ty.

He basically just got the RROD. I got the same thing a while ago and it can be fixed by the towel trick but it's temporary. It's not that bad to send it in for repair's though I got mine back in 6 days.

towel trick eh? He is a broke High School kid, I dont think he has the money for repairs.

If you can't fix it, then try to make it RROD and you can send it in to MS for free.

Its goofed, tho there is an Xtreme fix. (Below)

'okay the error e 74 is a problem with the heat sync not av cables or accessories. In order to fix it you need to take apart the xbox 360 and remove the flat silver heat sync, then take some thermal past and put it on the chip that connects to the heat sync then place the heat sync back on and boot up the system while applying pressure on the heat sync. the xbox should be working and all thats left is to put it back together. I did this to mine and its been working for over 6 months now.'

What you do for the towel trick is turn it on for about 20 minutes then wrap it in about 2 towels for around 45 minutes. Then you let it cool off for about a half hour then your good to go. But if he's still in warranty then the repairs are free.

3 year warranty covers E74. If his machine is made in January 2007 or later he is covered.

THIS

No towel trick needed.

Falcon model X360's will generate an E74 instead of a RROD when the GPU starts to have "issues"

MS may cover the repair if you ask or complain.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

Had this recently and the support team were very helpfull. I think you will be fine just without the 360 for a couple or 4 weeks. Should be no charge just hassle.
