avast! is a pretty good free anti-virus software.

If you need to put parental controls on your Firefox (which I do need) then suricate is a really good add on. Basically its the entire suricate user community that creates the database of blocked websites, but it is really easy to make your own white list.

I know most people on here aren't parents and in fact would not want their parents to see my suggestion, but if you are a parent then this is worth a look.

I try to use Web of Trust on Firefox, while it doesn't compleely block it does give me a heads up of fishy sites.

OT:

Good suggestions all, got a few more when someone mentioned CCleaner.

Defreaggler - Tool for defragmeting your HDD but you can defrag any given folder you want, not the whole thing. Also has an option for a quick defragment, but I have never used it to tell you about it.

Speccy - Tells you everything you need to know about your PC's hardware.

MediaCoder - enough said; converts video and music files, including converting videos to H.264 plus if you have an Nvidia card with CUDA, you can use your GPU to convert videos (it is the only video converter so far that uses CUDA the right way, plus outputting in the High Profile at Level 5.1).

I use Filezilla for FTP, works great.

And Notepad++ is indeed amazing.

I prefer ffmpeg. It supports a lot more filetypes.

There is an AMD GPU transcoder application too (ATI Video Converter).

ffmpeg is included within MediaCoder

A few more I remembered which were hiding:

Update Checker - checks your PC for versions of other free software programs and lets you know if updates are available for them. Works with a bunch of free, and some commercial, software.

MusicBrainz Picard - You can use this to create audio digital finger prints and use their servers to find out which song you are listening to. No more Unknown - Track 1.

Autoruns - Great startup manager. You can filter all Microsoft programs so you can be left with all 3rd party software and executables which run on your PC upon startup.

Winamp and Google Chrome are my suggestions for now

A couple more:

CPU-Z -- Tells you not only about a PC's CPU, but its motherboard and RAM, so you can buy upgrades without having to unscrew and check first!

BootVis -- Simply the best tool for improving Windows XP boot times around.
