Forums - General Discussion - James Cameron's Avatar

The trailer says it all...

Just a decade later after James Cameron's last film, Titanic, he has proven to the world that he is on par amongst the greatest film directors with his recently released movie, Avatar.

The movie was first panned with critisism before its release, various film critics predicted the film would be a significant disappointment at the box office, much like had been thought of Cameron's previous film Titanic.

It has showned much promise on its opening day and now it has made a significant profit: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=avatar.htm

I have watched the 3D version of it myself, and it is the best fantasy film I have ever seen embodying the spirit of nature and living things.

I would recommend others to the movie, what do you think?

i thought it ws pretty good,i always felt really sorry for the main hero guy because of his missing legs.... i was also wondering if perhasps its a metaphor for the iraq invasion

"They will know heghan belongs to the helghast"

"England expects that everyman will do his duty"

"we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender"

This movie made me cry....

I didn't think the movie was that good. Cliché, wrapped in a cliché.
But you should still watch it in the cinema, the 3d is awesome.

The movie was a FAILURE...

Many people didn't like it just because the native are blue in colour.

Very good but not great taken purely as a film, its main weakness being characters that are a little too thin and rely overly on preconceived stereotypes - i.e. it's good for what it is, but it's no masterpiece like say 2001.

Technically though, it is a marvel. Pandora is amazing to behold and the 3D is the first I've found worthwhile - i.e. not a gimmick. I'm glad it's doing good numbers, as it is in no way a bad movie - Transforms 2 is my idea of a bad movie - but hope that Cameron will take more narrative risks in any sequels, and focus on a more original story.

8.5/10 overall for me. Very good, with the visuals and solid if unoriginal story covering over the cracks in the dialogue.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I agree with Reasonable.

It's odd to me that I don't think it's a great movie, but I do think everyone should go see it. Its an advancement of the art in a very profound way.

Like the first use of color in a film, or surround sound. Not sure what those movies were (I think the color one was Wizard of Oz), but for there technical merits, I would have said everyone needs to see them.

So today, I will say if you can get to a theater where this movie is playing, then do so. If you wait 10 years before you get a chance to see it, then don't bother. What makes it great will be seccond hat by then.

It's a good movie but it's no that great. It's a long movie but is also very entertaining so I recommend this movie for all people. For me is 7/10.

Why Michelle Rodrigez had to die, I knew she would die.

Why don't you make like a tree and get out of here?

It bothers me when people complain about the movie being full of cliches, because just about every movie is full of cliches now. It also bothers me that people try to analyze the movie like it's a political metaphor, and judge it based on that.

When I saw the movie, I guess I viewed it differently than others. What I saw was a director trying to create a deep, engrossing fantasy world, and as far as I'm concerned he succeeded with flying colors. There was less detail on the story, and more detail about the actual world that the Na'Vi lived in. If Cameron hadn't built up the world so much, I would have had little emotional interest at the end of the movie, but because he did, I was really interested in the ending.

For that reason, Avatar is one of the most brilliant, phenomenal movies I've seen in a long, long time. It wowed me in ways that no movie has since the original Matrix.
