DemonFox I hear of plenty of people who get the YLOD after they boot it up for the first time since like a 2-3 days.. so I don't think playing it alot is a big cause..

I went to cali for about a week , Phoenix for about 2 days, and a little more recently Scottsdale for about 3-4 days, so have I gotten really lucky or something? Or is the failure rate still within the norm of below 5%?

There's a lot of luck involved...

When mine broke and I took it to the repair guy he was amazed I kept it on 2 years and never had a problem, so obviously it doesn't seem like it is something that is recommended...

And yes the problem is the same as the RROD, which involves Solder melting away too.

RROD is however easier to fix as getting to the motherboard when you open an Xbox360 is easier to do ( but RROD happens more often than YLOD, probably due to better ventilation and solder in the PS3).

I thought other things could also cause the yellow light to come on, but then again the RRoD was clearly defined as having the 3 red lights on and they have various error codes. The PS3 only has the yellow light.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Yellow light simply means general error, it can mean several things: Broken HDD, broken PSU, bad solder joints (caused by overheating), probably the most common issue. To avoid cracks in the solder and if your (phat) PS3 is out of warranty, it might not be a bad idea to open it up and replace the thermal paste (between heat sinks and CPUs). There are several guides how to do it on youtube. It's also possible to refloat the chips after cracks have appeared in the solder; for that you need a heatgun (again, search youtube for a guide). So if you have enough time and some patience, you can fix it yourself (at least temporarily so you can transfer your stuff to a new PS3).

"Well certainly with the Xbox 360, we had some challenges at the launch. Once we identified that we took control of it. We wanted to do it right by our customers. Our customers are very important to us." -Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb (10/2013). Note: RRoD was fixed with the Jasper-revision 3 years after the launch of 360

"People don't pay attention to a lot of the details."-Yusuf Mehdi explaining why Xbone DRM scheme would succeed

"Fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity; it's called Xbox 360,”-Don Mattrick

"The region locking of the 3DS wasn't done for profits on games"-MDMAlliance

Unfortunately you're screwed man. Take it from someone who got YLOD 2ce. Your only choices are:

1. Fix it yourself using complicated methods or the hair dryer trick as seen on youtube

2. Hope sony sends you the same ps3 back after spending your $150 to pay them

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

You're probably fucked

I have read a few posts like this, I have had my PS3 since September. Could anyone enlighten me as to how you back up your PS3 files? just in case.

The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.

3) Find someone local that will repair for you for cheaper..( if all you care is getting your data you only need your PS3 to work 1h or so..)

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

my understanding is no. When you put the harddrive in a new PS3 it will format the old drive. As far as I know you are screwed, but I could be wrong.

this, I lost all my saves =D

mM

You're screwed .... apparently!

Like I said it happened to me and the fix was finding someone local that fixed the PS3...
