Forums - General - Britain blasted as 'powerless' over China execution row

Boo Hoo.

He'd have been executed in his native Pakistan too.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

Ahh, England. The nation of "we once were."

Not bad for an island smaller than some American states. Plus in this more enlightened age, military power isn't as important. In fact the best countries to live in are Scandinavia, Austria, Switzerland etc. Not exactly military power-houses.

And I wouldn't read to much into the English complaining about England. We've been doing it for centuries.

The UK is useless diplomatically (and politically) anyway. Brown thinks he can influence the world, when he can't get his country to vote for him.

We aren't an economic power, save for the undue respect we get from when we were. We are in so much debt that not even optimistic propaganda-level predictions can forsee us with a balanced budget; our economy is all based on hollow consumer spending but we produce nothing of value except for financial services which have collapsed. Our government is unpopular but has refused to hold any elections until the last possible moment, while introducing stupid and unpopular policies(such as handing the music and film industry £1b to cut off the internet access of 'file sharers' while hoping to get the money back in increased VAT from music/film sales (which will fail)). The first thing they have promised to cut, instead of peripheral services, is higher education funding at a time when education is all that will save us from future economic disasters.

I hate living in Britain.

yeah even germany has more power in the world than you lol.

Sorry,where are you getting this from? Oh and if it came down to a armed conflict i think its pretty obvious who would win...Britian.

"England expects that everyman will do his duty"

"we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender"

Hmm... So a british that smuggled drugs gets executed in China and the british government is to blame. Yes, i can see the point.

As barefoot-british the guys name is, it appears that they have gotten used to where you can blame the natives for absolutely anything bad that happens and everyone, with the lead of the leftists, are agreeing.

I really laughed at them wanting Britain to attack China. You can say the double standards exist, but in practice there's a huge difference in attacking small, poor and politically non-existing Afghanistan than attacking China that is the complete opposite. There's really not much that anybody can do to China, they have way too much money and weapons for it.

@bolded

correct

@others

the UK isn't a world power anymore (really, hasn't been since WW2 as I understood, but hey...) DEAL WITH IT

we should concentrate on being as good a nation as possible now and stop complaining about how things used to be (hardly good old days either were they, war, slavery, absolute monarchy, all kinds of bad things went on during the empire years, some of you would do well to learn this)

Oddly, i agree with Kowenicki, if you travel to another state or country or region or what have you, you must know the rules of the area your going to, to avoid trouble at all costs.

true they should have givin more time to find out what was going on, but its a simple reason of what happens when you dont follow the rules...

i wonder what would happen if someone murders or commits rape in China? the punishment must be harsh.

Wow, reading all of this doom and gloom about the U.K. makes America's situation seem cheerful by comparison. Thanks guys, I needed that.

Kinda depresses me.  I liked it better when all the UK people denied it when I said the UK was more likely to go bankrupt then the US and was actually in a large amount of trouble compaired to other nations.

Maybe i've been playing to much TF2... but seriously, the first thing I thought of when I read this.

No offense.

A post I can agree with.

It's no fun being a Superpower.  Everyone treats you with double standards while demanding things from you and then critisizing you even if you deliver.

Intervene when things are going bad in poor countries and "Oh they're trying to be the world police."

Don't and it's "What are they heartless?  They're the biggest country in the world."

And you pretty much ALWAYS have to do some morally grey stuff.

All the stuff Europe did when it was collectivly the Super powers of the world is crazy.   The damage done to African's are probably never going to be fully fixed.

Harsh? The punishment is valid and it only takes one person to get the axe before others think twice about commiting a crime. In England there is no deterent, prisons are nice and cozy and even have better food than the NHS hospitals.

Lots of people intentionally commit crimes in the winter just to get a sample of all the luxuries they recieve....
