I do think portable consoles are in the same market... My favorite example is Dragon Quest. A game which was born in home consoles but now had his last instalment on the DS... If they weren't competing in the same market DQIX would have been on the PS3 or Wii.
1 2 3 not only you and me.
Livin' in sin is the new thing.
The DS should be able to do it around july or august 2010.

Even if home and handheld consoles are not shraing the same market,it doesn't mean handhelds have the advantage:
last generation, GBA had no competition whatsoever, and sold 80M~ while PS2 had 3 'serious' competitors (more than any other generation) and passed the 120M. read:home console market were definitely bigger.
in the current generation, however, there are 2 competitors in the handheld market, only 3 competitors in the home console market, yet the DS is almost outselling all home consoled combined, and the 'losing' competitor PSP is on par with the leading home console, Wii. read: handheld console market is bigger now.
so, I don't know if they have the same market, but they cn steal market share from one another, which considers as competition.
besides, Wii also have different market than other home consoles: 80% of female gamers own Wii. does that mean Wii isn't competition with PS360? (yeah, I know there were such discussion here)
lastly, who cares if consoles have the same market or not? we're comparing numbers for fun here..

pfff you know perfectly well why not. DS is a portable! It's that simple. It caters to many additional markets compared to home consoles. You don't buy a home console if you're going traveling. you don't buy a home console if you don't have a television set (for instance in Norway, you are obligates to pay the government a yearly subscription for their TV channels when you buy a television set, thus many students do no have a television set). there are also a bigger chance that families with 2 kids buy 2 DSs. You can't play 2 player on one handheld but you can on a home console, so two brothers will be more likely to have 2 DSs than 2 similar home consoles. also little children, like my 2 and a half year old cousin, are more likely to get a DS than a home console. home consoles also tend to be way more expensive. I'm not downplaying the DS's QUALITY here. I'm traveling right now, to DS heaven to be more precise, and of course I brought my DS and PSP. DS have quality games and is a quality platform no doubt about that. but comparing handheld sales to a home consoles sales is not justified imo. If however, the Wii surpasses it, it is an amazing achievement. also at the sales Soriku presented. are you sure they are right? about 2 years ago I read somewhere that the PS2 had already surpassed 140 million units. but of course, that could very well be wrong! also the DS will surpass the PS2 in 10-24 months depending on what the real PS2 numbers are. |
PS2 had a huge failure rate, my brother and cousin combined have gone through about 5. Again, not saying PS2 doesn't deserve all of the sales it got but people DO buy multiple consoles.
I dunno for PS2 is a moving target even now. I estimate Sony shipped around 145m PS2s to date and it is very likely that it'll cross the 150m barrier before the DS or anything else. A late but amazing feat.
I believe DS should surpass the PS2 by mid 2011.
Probably another year at least, another half a year if everything sells as usual
