Forums - Gaming Discussion - Square Enix Patents a new battle system, and a new PSP?

Square Enix designer Tetsuya Nomura recently announced that he is working on unannounced projects — one of which is a brand new title. Could this latest patent shed light onto that?

It's too early to tell; however, this patent application lists Tetsuya Nomura as the inventor of a character switching battle system for RPG/action RPG games. The system allows players to control and switch to temporary characters during combat — meaning, you can hop in the skin of another character. When time runs out, players then automatically change back to their main character and inherit the temp character's abilities.

The patent does not specify a platform, stating the combat system is designed for "a portable gaming apparatus." The apparatus included in the patent looks somewhat like the PSP.

More details in the link below.

that PSP looks like it can be held vertically and horizantily , and also , it had two analogs and something on the upper right corner.

Where does it look like that? I think it's just a handheld device that they didn't want to make look like it was the PSP specifically, but the idiots added the face buttons so it shows it's unequivocally the PSP. It's a badly sketched PSP, not a redesign

The concept sounds interesting, though

PSP-4000 reconfirmed!

PSP2 is coming next year! I expect a presentation in E3 2010!

I'm writing news on it right now...

they didn't just sketch it, they numbered it and shown as what each button does.

I think you're reading too much into this. Maybe they wanted to make a PSP, but also showing how it could work for DS too (after all, the buttons are the same). Maybe they wanted to keep it ambiguous, using it in the PSP but also showing how it could be used in a supposed, future, not-yet-real handheld device. It could be thousand of different things, and not necessarily mean it has to be a PSP2
