David Jaffe says he would change God of War to include structure from Zelda

David Jaffe, the creator of God of War, recently posted some messages on his Twitter account reflecting on what he would change in the series. Of course, the gameplay style of God of War is set in stone and Jaffe no longer works on the franchise. Nonetheless, Jaffe seems to appreciate Zelda and explained that he would mix God of War together with the structure from the Zelda titles on the N64 if he had the chance to make the first game now.

“If I were to do GOW now, I would do GOW meets ZELDA 64 structure. Much more interested in immersive games now vs. scripted experiences…But I think Zelda open world+GOW  puzzles/combat=pretty good mash. Many other games have mash’d that up…Not to imply I don’t love GOW. I DO very much. But I just would not design it the same way now, in 2010.”

High praise from David Jaffe. It's too bad he doesn't work on God of War games anymore.

Now, in 2010? We have a message from the future.

^ I am just that fast :)

I think also shying away from a scripted, chronologically accurate and scripted story would make the francise capable of infinite sequels, also like the Zelda series. Maybe Sony might leverage that idea in the future...

Darksiders is going to be like God of War and Zelda combined of what I've heard.

that would be a great mash up if done right . hope they make something similar

Atto Suggests...:

Book - Malazan Book of the Fallen series

Game - Metro Last Light

TV - Deadwood

Music - Forest Swords

That probably would have made God of War better, which I thought wasn't possible!

Odd. Future. Wolf. Gang. Kill. Em. All. OFWGKTA Don't give a fuck!

Fuck Steve Harvey. FREE EARL!

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be the GREATEST game EVER made!!!

I'd take a bullet for Square-Enix!

Okay... but that's not why I like God of War...

Hmmm, there are many scripted experiences out there. Imagine Call of Duty going Zelda style? o_O

But yeah, it's two different styles. I don't see how today's GoW could have been made Zelda style. Zelda is more immersive, yeah, but because of scripted events in the now present GoW, the story has that "in your face" epicness that a Zelda style game couldn't possibly provide.

Just my two cents.

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

Watch my insane gameplay videos on my YouTube page!

So you would rather have the same game with better graphics?

Most people would.

I, like Jaffe, have found myself leaning towards engulfing engine based immersive games like Diablo II or Zelda, where exploration is encouraged, rather than scripted experiences like those found in GoW and Uncharted 2.

That gameplay difference, is why I believe games like GTA, GT, Final Fantasy, Mario, and Zelda probably should always have a larger following than games that focus on scripted experiences.

However, that's not to say games like GoW and RE4 aren't as good or better than their "epic" counterparts. RE4 even branched out a little and almost transcended the "scripted game" cliche without sacraficing all the good things that go along with that, like a tight pace.

I just prefer the ability to create my own scenerios with the tools I'm given as well as be able to interact with excellent designed scripted gameplay. So that's why I wish God of War did take on an open world aspect, and in doing so become a much larger, and more engrossing game.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.
