Back to the Article. Who here can tell me with a strait face that the 360 is NOT a success story in N. America this gen? They making money on the 360. They out selling last gen winner almost 2 to 1. They got the highest attach ratio. I'm confuse why most people on this site still believe that 360 is NOT a success story in N. America this gen.

You're correct.  The 360 has had a huge amount of success in the U.S.  But the gaming industry is much more than just one country, it is the entire world.  In my opinion, the problem is those that tout NPD data as if it (USA) means more than the rest of the world.

I believe we call that arrogance.

Relative to the original Xbox the 360 is a huge success everywhere. Oh and America is big enough so if you do well there you don't need to do amazingly well anywhere else.

Just because Microsoft is breaking even, that's not a 'success'.  And just because Microsoft is doing 'well' in America, that doesn't mean they don't want to do better in America or break into other markets.  That's just completely opposite of good business sense.  You really think back in the late 80s when Windows took off Microsoft Execs just went 'well, we've sold well in America, let's just cruise on steady with this and see how it goes...'  No....they went for the WHOLE MARKET.  ANd if they had a chance to penetrate further markets, they would.  Oh...and they are trying.

I never said it was a success, I said relative to the original Xbox its a huge success and theres the difference.

We're talking America so this is not at all surprising..it's 360s market. And if you look at all the info, it actually doesn't necessarily mean that American 360 owners buy a lot more games than American ps3 owners; the number of games is almost identical. In America, 360 has sold ~20.5 million systems, while ps3 has sold ~11.8 million. So 360 has sold almost twice the number of systems in America than ps3 has. Two times more 360s in America than ps3=two times more software bought for 360 than ps3. Still a success, still money for MS, but not really a surprise.

Uh...am I missing something here?  I understand what you're trying to say.  The 360 made money and therefore it did what the original XBOX couldn't do.  Even surpassed most peoples expectations.  And that is a substantial achievement by comparison.  But I guess what I'm trying to say is success is the wrong term.  Because even relative to the original XBOX, all the 360 has done for Microsoft is make up the difference for the original XBOX and make a marginal profit.  Even then, the 360 has been dipping down below and then back up over the red line ever since it came out.

The 360 hasn't made a net profit yet, overall it's still at least $1.5 billion in the red.

Squilliam is right with what he said. Sure, there's a lot of spin and surpassing the first Xbox is an incredibly low bar for success, but he didn't say anything that is not true.

Well then I'm even more confused.  I don't know how the 360 could be considered anywhere near a success, considering it from a financial standpoint or just using the term as a general expression, if its '1.5 billion in the red'.  That pretty much places it near the same place the original XBOX was last gen.

Though what I've been reading is different, that around 2008 the 360 finally turned a profit, which it summarily lost again next quarter and it has been flip-flopping ever since.  But 1.5 billion in the red or near even, now I really don't see how the 360 can be considered doing at all well.

When you're talking about sport teams, do you do this too? O.o

Sheesh, some of you guys need to relax, I'll rather have normal fanboys that say "Gaystation" or "Halo sucks" than this mind breaking shit.

Sorry gaystation fan.
