Forums - PC Discussion - Torchlight, an example of a major problem with PC gaming

So I took the plunge and got Torchlight after hearing so much about it and lets be honest the price makes it a great bargain.  After installing the game I start to play and I'm really enjoying the art style and the game in general.  So much so that instead of heading back to the town I keep going deeper into the mine to get more loot only to have the game crash on me.  I go back into the game and find I've lost most of the progress I made in the game.  This is after the game was already patched and it's something that is all too familiar to me when it comes to PC gaming.  I end up going to the forums for PC games typically because of bugs in a game.

I had been planning to get back into PC gaming in a big way but now I realize just how much I took for granted the relative lack of bugs and wasted time in console gaming.  Maybe it's worth sticking with it for the gems (C&C4, Starcraft 2, etc) but otherwise it's a major hassle and just shows that comparing console and PC gaming is dishonest for those that try to make it out as if the experiences are the same except with better PC graphics and servers.  Sorry for the post but I really do love PC games (many of the ones I look forward to and play on 360 have a PC flavor to them).  It's too bad that there's nothing in place in PC gaming that would ensure that any PC game we buy is relatively bug free rather than feeling like it's a game of chance.

Good for you but I noticed when I went to their forum for help with the issue that the thread I was reading had 150,000 views and it's 58 pages long at this time so I'm definitely not alone.



The problem with PC gaming is that there is no quality control. If you put a game on a Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo console, they force you to meet a certain bar. There is nothing like that for PC.

What twesterm says does have merit though. There is not a real standard you have to meet as far as quality control.

Stuff like that can be annoying on PC or console. However, if it's one thing I've learned from playing video games and doing graphic design and video production is that you really need to save often. Be it auto save, quicksave or both, I'd rather make sure I lose as little progress as possible in an event like a crash and have nobody to blame but myself if I do end up losing a ton of progress.

Now, the games where you can't quicksave like a Final Fantasy game where you have to go through a large area with tons of fighting before you make it to the next save point and then there's a ton of cutscenes on top of it.... ugh

*edit* In a game where you can quicksave, like Half-Life 2 for example, there are times where I'll save after nearly every enemy encounter or segment of the puzzle or just every few minutes or so.

There is no quality control in console gaming either. What about Ninja Bread Man, Anubis II, Sonic next gen or many of the other buggy unplayable games that should've (in theory) been rejected by the 3 main console developers for not reaching their "bar".




Actually consoles dont really have quality control, see Last Remnant X360 for example.

But, all Xboxs and all PS3s operate pretty much the same, with the same (or very very similar firmware) , hardware, etc. Your PC might have any number of things wrong with it. Your PC probably also has a lot of stuff running in the background.... hard for any game maker to take into consideration every single piece of hardware, driver version, and user-fuckup that a game might possibly encounter. Its not always an issue of game quality and QA.

Sorry you cant get your games to work on PC though, that is indeed a bummer.



No, all consoles do have certain requirements and quality control that you must pass before you can release the game.

That by no means the game is bug free if it passes, no game is bug free, but because of those requirements console games, even Ninja Bread Man and The Last Remnant, go through a certain process to get the game passed which catches a LARGE number of bugs.

PC games just don't have that so they can *easily* release with many more bugs than the console versions.
