alright so, I want to play FF 8, is it good compared to FF VII?

How long is it?

Is it free roam like FF VII

Great choice. I'd rank FF7 a bit higher than 8, but just a tiny. If 7 is a 10/10, for me 8 is a 9.9/10, so go figure. I'd take 8's battle system, though, for me it's the absolute best battle system ever done in any FF, simply brilliant and different to any other system.

The game is usual FF length, 40-50 hours, more if you do sidequests

I think that every FF is free roam (well, FFX is the most linear, but even that one can be considered free roam). Anyway, FF8 has a world map, so yes it's free roam

You'll enjoy it, it's inevitable to compare it to 7, but just play it and you'll find an amazing game

The praise is well deserved. It fell apart in disc 4, but up to then it was a great ride. I loved the characters and the skits.

Looks like im in the minority here but I rank FF series as:

1) X
2) XII
3) VII
4) VI
5) VIII
6) IX

Still a good game, but for me its the lowest of all of em. I was put off too much by the graphic style which hampered my ability to like the characters. Once I moved past that though everything was great.

A warrior keeps death on the mind from the moment of their first breath to the moment of their last.

Below Final Fantasy VII, VIII and X.

It's my least favorite FF of the ones I've played till completion/nearly till completion (if I were to include the ones I've played just for a few hours, that "award" would go to FF4)

I've never understood the fascination everyone has with that game

I never understood the fascination with Suikoden II either.

Around the Network

1. FF6 ( top story, top characters, top battle system, great funny moments!)

2.FF7 ( complicated  story, good characters, good battle system, many side quests)

3. FF9 (great story, great characters, great combat, motherf****** bitch of a steal system, stealing from a near death boss for 20 mins is just monkey dump)

4. FF8 ( my first ff, ok story, stupid ending, believable characters, shity battle system)

5. FF10 ( motherfucking grind fest piece of shit, best combat system, good characters, many side quests)

One of my least favorite FFs.
IMO, FFVI > FFX > FFVIII > FFVII > FFIV > FFIX

This is the FF game for the PS1 that I'M going to buy when it's released. It was an amazing experience from beginning to end. The ending was simply epic.

The whole game felt like a classic Disney animation. Much better than the more "mature" games in the series (you know, no emo characters or melodramatic teenage love stories seemingly created by the talented writers of The Young and the Restless). Haven't played 6 yet, but 9's definately the best 3D FF (IMHO of course).

Final Fantasy IX was one of the last good FF's. No FF compares with IX.
