Okay after a quick check it looks like the peak price of FF games was FFVI at 11,970 yen.

http://www.square-enix.com/jp/archive/ff6/

Then they got much cheaper starting with FFVII at 7,140 yen.

http://www.square-enix.com/jp/archive/ff7/

FYI FFIV was 9,240 yen the exact same price as FFXIII, haha

WHOA why was FFVI that expensive (130$)?

all costed 9,000 yen, ff13 makes less revenue and profit

Game prices didn't go up in Japan like it did here?  Either way, even if it made more revenue... it likely made less profit.

Still all considering, it did well considering how deficient the platform is compaired to the PS2.  Sure FFX started off with a similar userbase... but there was also a lot more hype and good feelings about the PS3.

It seems like it will hit the SE prediction about square on the head.  All that's important is that the brand wasn't damaged.  I'd be surprised if we saw a FF15 this generation though.  I kinda expect 13, 14... and then that to be it unless the generation is prolonged by the financial troubles of Sony and the economic downturn in general.

when all is said and done, FFxiii may bring in more profit (at least more than ffxii did considering ffxiii has a prolonged dev time as well). It all depends on the game's reception in the U.S. If it's received well here, the 360 is sure to sell a couple (probably over a million or even more), maybe even more than the ps3 and that'll put it ahead of ffxii but still not the high point of the series (ffvii).

Anyway I think the game costed a little too much....

I agree is well I mean how long was this game in development out of curiously? Are even FF:CB for that matter. It seems Square likes to take their time.

I dunno.  They both had a prolonged dev time... but FF13 cost more to begin with.  Delays seem to proportionally raise cost.

It's possible, but i'd honestly be shocked if it was the case.

Not only that, but, IMO, Nintendo president was quite a tyranical figure at the time, they ruled gaming, so could do whatever, and to receive the Nintendo seal of aproval, the price was high.

You guys don't even notice that at THIS POINT, the yen to USD exchange rate is probably the weakest ever in history...

the 9k yen probably equaled the same amount of 12k yen in USD.

Yen values more now right? And all the costs of the game in Japan were paid in Yen, the salary of the employes, the royalties to Sony, the profit of retailer, the costs with eletricity, water, food and etc. S-E spended in Yen and will receive in Yen.

The problem is when the game releases overseas, they'll have to exchange all the revenue to Yen, and than the exchange rate will be a true problem.
