Annoyingly my HDTV isn't quite good enough for 3D, only 100Hz, so my only option is my next PC

Will this be good enough:

http://www.sony.co.uk/product/vn-f-series/vpcf11z1e-bi

It has quad core i7, so should be fine on the processing side, but I am worried about the GeForce GT 330M graphics card, but I think the screen should be okay... Though even if it can't do HD, it is still a monster of a laptop

Sadly the video card will limit the 3D performance of this machine. You will be able to play 2006 and prior games just fine. I think the laptop will have issues playing current games even on low settings.

That video card is about the same as radeons HD4650...you need atleast a 4850 or GTX260 on the nvidias side.

Okay, thanks. Do you mean it will struggle in 2D as well? tbh, I am not really that interested in 3d, it would just be a nice bonus...

@ Kowneicki, firstly that is not the exact computer that I will actually get, mine will be £100 cheaper. With a quick look at Dell's site, I can't find anything else with 8GB of RAM and quad core i7 processor AND a blu-ray reader

yeah 2D gaming wise as well the video card isn't amazing.

If you set resolution to 1366x768 and turn off AA, you should be able to run most games on medium to high settings. At 1920x1080 it will struggle... I had a comparable card and I could only get a good frame rate on Crysis on low settings. My processor wasn't as good but everythign else is comparable.

I love 3D gaming.

didn't give me a headache or anything.... but i'm very skeptical about that whole current gen consoles 3D.... it's been all about HD graphics and rare are the games that can actually produce true HD graphics, so selling the near future as a 3D fest with just patches and a firmware, it's just hypocrytical. I mean sure they'll have 3D... but it'll probably be with a graphical quality that is lower than wii games.

Now should they say that next gen hardware will be fully 3D compliant (as in 3D vision where any game can be 3D, even if not planned for it), then yeah, I do see game producers looking forward to this... 3D is a way to look flashy without having to spend tons of money on being more HD than HD already is. It's the cheap evolution to make use of higher processing power... and HD games already cost enough to produce.

Well, the examples Sony have shown so far on PS3 see games running in 720p with 60 FPS per eye without a real hit on visuals. I don't see how that is much of a "downgrade" to be honest.

Did Sony show anything else other Stardust HD 3D running at 720p @ 60hz X2? What res was Wipeout HD running at?

From what I read those GT5 3D demos ran on multiple PS3s. I could be wrong though. I wish sony wasn't so tight lipped about their 3D plans.

Come to think of it, SSHD might actually be the only game to be confirmed 720p. But to my understanding, the SDK currently being used is built around 720p, and the general idea of the games Sony have chosen to retrofit 3D onto, is that most of them have resolutions higher than 720p, so that they can be downscaled. Both GT5, MLB: The Show, WipEout and SSHD run (or can run) in a higher resolution than 720p.

lol, just thought I'd mention this, but I brought up 3D TV with my mom, and even she responded that 3D TV will never take off. I was shocked she even knew anything about 3D TV

Anyways, I'd love to play with 3D games/movies, but the cost is so prohibitive, and we haven't even moved most of our programming to HD. Heck, lots of people still have SD TVs. I'm also with Twesterm though, as I hate wearing glasses on my glasses, as they make them for people without glasses.

My mom couldn't finish avatar in the theater. Said her head was throbbing and eyes were sore...

Otherwise, glasses on glasses may seem like a problem, but Nvidia vision states (in the manual) that their product works equally for people with or without glasses. I can't confirm or deny... :)

@ disolitude: Very nicely done. Im very excited to see what 3D will be able to do. For those of us who are lucky enough to be able to take the techno jump (or like myself have a 3D ready tv) the possibilities are fantastic.

Rumor right now is that 3.2 PS3 firmware update will enable 3D on the ps3 (probably movies only).

Ill go back and find some of those links I showed you earlier, to add to the official post for members who want to read more (about HDMI, PS3 blueray 3D and other things)

Sweet...yeah if you find something that adds more details to the PS3 3D upgrade, ill add it to the OP. I tried to be as basic as possible, and there was no PS3 3D details when I made this thread...

While not gaming (but close enough).  This is what the blue-ray disc accociation wants to do with 3D blueray. (1080P per eye @ 60hz)

http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20091217005371&newsLang=en

Now this is interesting too

"The 1.4 version of the specification will define common 3D formats and resolutions for HDMI-enabled devices. The specification will standardize the input/output portion of the home 3D system and will specify up to dual-stream 1080p resolution."

http://www.guru3d.com/news/hdmi-14-specifications-officially-presented/

The PS3s firmware update will included some of the 1.4 HDMI specs (such as Stero 3D support/throughput @120hz) but others it cannot (no audio to/from channel, no ethernet port since these require hardware as well).

I watched Avatar with 3D glasses on my normal glasses and it worked perfectly.

No headaches, no focus problems or anything.
