For me FF XII was a big letdown.

No. It wasn't because of the battle mechanics or general overworld experience. It was the story around which the game unraveled.
It was so uninspiring that if it wasn't for all the extra goodies in the game like the sidequests, locations etc. then i wouldn't have bothered raking in some 120 odd hours of gameplay

I don't mean to be rude, sarcastic, mean, or anything of the sort, but this REALLY doesn't compute. Do you play most other Final Fantasies for longer than that?

FFXII is pretty easily the most massive Final Fantasy, especially considering how much less grinding it takes to finish out than is necessary for equivalent tasks in the other games (killing Yiazmat is nothing like maxing your Materia)

That's fine, but I was more getting at the "this game was a letdown. I played it for 120 hours." I almost never play a game for over a hundred hours; when I do, it's because the game is GREAT.

You know, you have to find the logic that i had put in my post. I was let down by the story of the game, which is a big deal for me in the game. Of course i didn't know the full story until i played to the end of the game, so there you have one reason for which it took me so long to play.

Now i also have this fetish that i want to do all possible side quests available which actually made up for more than 70% of my total game time.

I personally also don't understand the "i was let down so i put away the game" thing. I bought the game so that i could play it, not look at the boxart so even if i don't particularly like the game i will still beat it for the sake of beating it.

Is that enough sense for you now?

If i lose access to this profile as well....I'm done with this site.....You've been warned!!.....whoever you are...

Happy Wii60 user. Me and my family are a perfect example of where hardcore meets casual and together mutate into something awesome.

If someone cares about her opinion. Onna76 was quite dissapointed in this game. Don't know her well but her opinions about JRPG's were almost in line with mine and considering she was a VG member aswell.

People, calm down. This is one guy not liking it compared to these guys actually liking it

There is still hope that FFXIII will be an awesome game.

Most of those are from people who haven't played nearly as long as the guy who did the preview. He gave a lot more detail also so I think Ill stick with his interpretation of things. A lot of what he said were things I thought would be a problem.

If you're a fan of the series you'll be buying this no matter what.

If you're not a fan, I highly suggest going back and playing some of the older games before considering purchase of a new one.

Real fans wouldn't accept any piece of crap that is thrown at them with the name Final Fantasy slapped on it.

1) Its bad that it is that linear, 20 hours into a game. If that trend continues, you wonder what kind of scores and sales XIII will garner.
2) The review is only 20hrs into the game. I simply cannot believe someone would review a JRPG prior to finishing the game. You just cannot do that in an RPG.

Bad like in FFX?  Aren't JRPG's mostly linear untill you are almost at the end of the game and can explore the world (the best part in any JRPG for me btw).

2)  I think most reviewers do that.  What is finishing anyway. Was finishing FFX storyline enough to give a good review of the game or must have done all the side quests aswell (that can take 150+ hours).

To be honest, not really: I'm very much in the "I'm putting this game down now" camp. But I can respect your stance. Thanks for the response!

 1) Scores are already in, and the series is pretty front-loaded, so most of the sales likely are too.

2) Contrary to this thread's title, it's not a review.

Although some really open up toward the end, there are quite a few that offer strong sidequests prior to the end.

For example, Tales of Vesperia contained multiple, multiple sidequests that could be done prior to getting late into the game.

FFVII had Condor Fort as a great sidequest once you got out of Midgar. VIII had Triple Threat as a game-within-a-game which was a good sidequest series.

Theres a difference between finishing a game 100% to review, and finishing what may be 30% of the full game. I could understand someone playing through the main quest + some side quests that aren't too long, in order to review. But when someone says 'I'm 80% through the chapters and this game is XYZ' just doesn't sit right with me. Yes, there are some things that you can certainly comment on (plot, battle system, ect), but as you said - some introduce major concepts near the end, and it doesn't sit right if you review a game prior to knowing where it heads.

@noname - Final Fantasy does sell outside of Japan, 'ya know. If the reviews are bad in the west, then I don't expect it to have strong sales.

I mistook your meaning. That said, reviews aren't going to be bad in the West, just like they weren't in Japan. It's not How Things Are Done.

Given the review scores for other JRPGs this gen...I think you may be wrong.
