The slums are a part of Manila, Philippines..

but I agree that the government should buy vast amounts of these abandoned houses and turn them into projects. There are a lot of homeless people in the U.S. and it seems to make perfect sense to put them there.

I knew that first slum picture couldn't have been Detroit. It had palm trees in the background...

But on topic, yeah, Detroit has been pretty messed up. The Silverdome being sold for an amount that a trio of regular middle-class homeowners could have paid for with some pretty simple loans (only around $500k for a building that cost $50 million to put together)

When the rest of the country's housing market comes back, though, people might start looking at Detroit again. $100 for a home, even if it needs thousands of dollars in renovation, is still a steal. The laws of economics should balance it out, but you need significant demand to accrue in other parts of the country to do it, which could take a while.

To be fair, the silverdome does take 1-2 million a year to upkeep.

Still, i'd just demolish it and hold on to the land.  Detroit can't be ignored forever.

Ceadar Point is right nearby, and that's rated the number 1 amusement park in the world.

Big Fun, some pretty decent cheap restraunts....

That's some of the stuff i'm missing about Cleveland now that i'm in Las Vegas.

Cleveland actually has a lot of cool stuff... you've just got to search it out.

If that is how you are going to compare the cities, then Detroit is not bad relative to Cleveland. Detroit also possesses a renowned orchestra. Detroit also possesses good theatres; Detroit possesses the largest theatre district aside from Broadway. Detroit, unlike Cleveland, actually possesses pro teams that win championships-yes, a low blow. Detroit also has a lot of cool stuff.

A lot of cool stuff, not as much though... and well... the cool stuff in detroit is mostly centered around the bad parts of detroit.

While a lot of clevelands stuff is in the "better" areas.  Outside of the small independent theatres and stuff, though even that area is being cleaned up.

As for the pro sports teams that reminds me of a really meanspirited jim rome exchange.

Overexcited Guy from Cleveland - Lebron James is going to win us a championship

Guy from Detroit - Yeah, sure Cleveland is the city of Champions.

Email - Cleveland IS the city of Champions,

Signed Detroit, City of jobs.

Home to a higher unemployment rate than its graduation rate.

Thanks to fuckheads buying Japanese import cars instead of supporting American car companies. Detroit has always relied on the auto industry so they are really screwed up now.

1) Make better cars

2) Lots of Japanese cars are built in the US/Canada.

Thats not fair to America.

That's Detroit. I'm sure that most other countries have their own Detroit.

Not true! Cleveland rocks.

Free trade is a leftist policy now? Isn't it a natural part of free market philosophy?

You'd think.

Generally the people I see if favor of getting rid of NAFTA tend to be Republicans though.

Just how Republicans tend to be isolationists wanting to curb foreign aid, yet also start wars.

Both parties seem to have a number of weird issues like that.

The only time this wasn't the case i've seen was the presidential election.  Where McCain promised to increase funding of education to Michigan to train people for new next generation jobs, and Obama promised to either greatly revise or abolish NAFTA.

Maybe it has to do with that weird conspiracy theory about making all of North America into one big country and they're afraid NAFTA is helping it happen.

Although honestly I don't even see what the problem would be -- we get Canada and maybe we can whip Mexico into shape. If nothing else the illegal immigration problem would be solved.

100 or so years ago, it was up here in Canada. Well, as far as the Liberals ever were a 'leftist' party, anyway. They called it reciprocity and the Conservatives were staunchly opposed to the idea.

A century later NAFTA was pushed through by conservatives on both sides of the border. It's funny how times change.

I find it hilarious that he acts like its purely leftism that has decimated Detroit. I didn't watch to the end of the video but did he mention white flight and the effect of the automotive industries outsourcing away from Detroit?

Those to me are the most obvious reasons for the urban decay in Detroit.

It mentions the auto industry quite extensively as well as the large number of people that moved away from the city.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
