Why do people presume i know the answer to that?

Fortunately, i own the guide. First star, at the beginning of the third area where the cogs are rolling down towards you, you have to mount the cogs, just like it requires you to do at the very end, but you have to mount it at the first set of them in that third area.

Whew, this game is starting to get tougher. The first 70 or so stars to get to Bowser are pretty easy for the most part, but once you go that extra steps to get the remaining stars, it starts to kick your ass. So far, the speed run on the final bowser stage, the purple coins in Clockworks, and the entire Stone Cyclone galaxy have been the hardest ones for me. I probably spent like 15 lives just on Stone Cyclone..

Spoilers I guess (if you don't know about star totals or what you unlock when you get them all)

Has anyone gotten all 242 stars? I just finished tonight. The Grandmaster Galaxy comet star was one of the most difficult things I've done in awhile. I must've gone through 25-30 lives.

Now I'm sad. No more SMG. :(

Oh is it? Lovely. I like the idea of the last star being immensely difficult.
