Should du just under 200k next week and should get to around 2m before any budget releases or international versions.

And in a way I have to agree with the "system seller" thing on the surface. While FF XIII added maybe 150k new PS3s this week, the effect will be short-lived.

On the other hand though, maybe 1m PS3s have been sold in the last couple of years to Final Fantasy fans in anticipation for FF XIII so it definitely is a system seller, just that the sales pattern is different to many other games and harder to spot immediately in that it sold systems prior to release and in the first week of release, not for months afterwards (like NSMB Wii will, or like Brain Training etc did)...

Yeah, I agree with this. It's unreasonable to expect an established franchise like FF to drive sales after its release, because nearly all the people it will sell systems to, will do so early (either on or before the week of release). Its system-selling power is tied to its small legs.

On the other hand, titles that sell well over time like the Wii series, or break out hits like MH will sell consoles over a long period of time. For example, it's possible the next MH (say, next gen) will see a pattern closer to FF.

the next monster hunte will be released on the psp :p

damn people are getting defensive.

what is wrong with me saying I had higher expectations of consoles being sold? hell I even own a PS3 myself.

The way this game was hyped it was suppose to be the rebirth of the PS3. This was the game that was ment to make the PS3 king.

Or are you all forgetting the nonsense crap most of you said about it?

To me you cannot factor out the holidays and repurcahse of a special edition ps3 as some factor in the sales. How much it was, who really knows? and I don't really care.

It would of been interesting to see how well this boosted sales the slowest week in Japan to get a true indicator.

Two things: a few people like to say 'most people' when they mean a few; secondly demotruk has made a valid point about system sellers, but because some people can only see there own view of concepts they argue with a straw man or get angry about it. He has defined what he means by system seller and is probably correct when he says it won't be a seller in the way games like the Wii series and Brain Training are... they are leggy sellers to the new market and probably some of the old market too.

It would be nice to have an occasional debate without the old 'hater' phrase being bandied about when people say something relevant. I mean, it's 'only' sales of a console.

Yes.

www.spacemag.org - contribute your stuff... satire, comics, ideas, debate, stupidy stupid etc.

Everyone just listen to baz and be quiet ^^ Seriously :)

*edit*

or discuss in a civilized manner, of course :P

To clarify, I was just agreeing that it really is a different kind of system seller, and it depends on how you define it, just as several people have said.  Including ioi.  There's the type of system seller that the Wii has almost a total monopoly on, which involves a breakout hit, or a game that expands the market steadily and just keeps selling...  and then there are the big names which appeal to long time gamers, which probably sell most of the systems they sell in advance of the actual game release, though in many cases they also cause big (and in some cases massive) spikes in system sales when the game releases, and add a kind of "gamer cred" to the system which is pretty hard to measure.

Thank you MC for not ruining my prediction ;)

Just wow....Awesome. My prediction of a sell-through was wrong though. Looks like PS3 may reach another Million Mark pretty soon

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

When I said this would be the biggest JRPG releases in a long time, I was laughed at. Looks like this may go down as one of the biggest releases for the entire gen in Japan.

There were 2 RPGs released just this year that had higher openings. I can think of 3 total this gen off the top of my head. All are on the DS mind you. If this was in the context of home console only then you have a point. In the grander scheme of all jRPGs though it was not close to the biggest in a long time. It is a very big opening though. I would be speechless if this game didn't stick in the top 10 for opening weeks in Japan.

Edit: Oops I am slighly wrong. One of the jRPGs I was thinking of did slightly less (1.44 million) in the opening week. That puts FFXIII as probably a lock for top 5 jRPG openings this gen in Japan only.

I suppose someone will now say that MC numbers don't count and Famitsu numbers do?

Seriously, great numbers. Some people expected more, far more (I can easily provide quotes including very recent ones if someone asks for those) but many didn't expect anything close. So everybody should relax, these are great numbers.
