I thought Time just listed the top ten games without actually ranking them. Or was that some other mainstream publication?
I don't fully agree with the assertion that it's just bragging rights. I think if a game is getting a lot of GOTY attention, and it's only a modest selling game, then that would help sales of the game a lot. Just like winning an Academy award or Golden Globe for best picture gives a movie a box office or DVD sales boost.
If Demon's Souls were to win some of the bigger GOTYs (or ever if it was on those lists) it would benefit from improved sales. NSMB on the other hand, not so much since it's getting amazing sales anyway. Uncharted 2 being somewhat in between sales-wise should get some sales benefit from this (and Uncharted 1 by association too possibly). Arkham Assylum would also get a bit of a helping hand with it's sales, which it would seem to deserve.
A GOTY award is basically the best form of free advertising a game can get. A game is promoted as one of the best games you can play on any gaming platform, by people who are supposedly objective and free from PR bias.
