I'd take something like that instead of spending 170$ and only getting a dual-core CPU. There's really no sense in spending that much money and not getting a quad.

Wii/PC/DS Lite/PSP-2000 owner, shameless Nintendo and AMD fanboy.

My comp, as shown to the right (click for fullsize pic)

CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T @ 3.2 GHz
Video Card: XFX 1 GB Radeon HD 5870
Memory: 8 GB A-Data DDR3-1600
Motherboard: ASUS M4A89GTD Pro/USB3
Primary Storage: OCZ Vertex 120 GB
Case: Cooler Master HAF-932
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Extra Storage: WD Caviar Black 640 GB,
WD Caviar Black 750 GB, WD Caviar Black 1 TB
Display: Triple ASUS 25.5" 1920x1200 monitors
Sound: HT Omega Striker 7.1 sound card,
Logitech X-540 5.1 speakers
Input: Logitech G5 mouse,
Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 keyboard
Wii Friend Code: 2772 8804 2626 5138 Steam: jefforange89

Makes perfect sense getting that dual-core over an AMD quad...if you can get the intel, get the intel....Huge cache on that thing

Would only notice a quad's advantages in certain things, will notice a dual-core in Everything

Well, now that I look at them again, that particular phenom is nice, I'd just reccomend Intel over AMD if you've got the money for it...They really are worth the money

Just waiting for that PS Vita to come out so I can play some full featured games on the go with that beautiful screen and control scheme...

i agree with jefforange im currently running a Phenom II X4 955 currently OC to 3.8 GHz! I will never go back from quad core. Of course i do ALOT of heavy gaming and didnt really want to spend 3 times as much money on an intel core i7 that is 5% faster.

Long Live SHIO!

The CPU I linked to has more cache than the Core 2 Duo he's thinking of getting...

But either way, if you're spending less than 200$ on your CPU, there's really no sense in buying Intel.  You'll get a much better product for your money with AMD.

Honestly, Intel doesn't make anything better than AMD and AMD doesn't make anything better than Intel. Whatever delusions you have about that, you better get rid of them. It should only come down to power vs cost and compatability.

The Core i5 750 is an excellent price and has great performance / dollar.

you can get an i5 quad and motherboard for $30 more than your present build.

Taks this combo that I linked in the first post.

CPU, motherboard, and 4 GB DDR3.

What are you using the computer for? Any CPU-intensive apps (e.g. video encoding)? Which games and at what resolutions/settings? And what's your budget?

For example, if your CPU work is limited to office tasks and web browsing, you don't need a quad and you certainly don't need an i5. Something like an X3 720, which is $50 less than the E8400 and performs the same in most CPU tasks. Spend more on the GPU for gaming - maybe a 5770 or 5850.

Or, if you are doing a lot of video encoding, go for the i5 750, and spend less on the GPU.

So it depends on your answer to my first questions. Either way though, you can do better on price or performance than the E8400.
