Forums - Sales - M$ and Sony may have an untapped market under their noses!

This is my first major post so please bear with me.

If we have learned anything this generation it's that it doesn't take the "best" games, amazing storytelling, compelling gameplay, nor HD and high end graphics. All it took was for Nintendo to look at several faces of an untapped market. First, the motion controls, then games that make great use of them (see RE4 among many others). This appealed to the casuals, the non-gamers AND the core gamers. Now we see Sony and M$ following suit one way or another in order to recuperate from the beating.

I don't know if M$ and Sony have ever considered it but aside from their new "gimmicks" coming out, there is another market they can easily appeal to: The PC gamers. Why do I say this? Simple. In the past 2 years, through my interactions with co-workers (most are gamers funny enough), friends, classmates, and several forum discussions on MANY other sites with perhaps thousands of responses, ALOT of PC gamers have been turned off into gaming on both the 360 and PS3. If they both offer web browsing, online multiplayers, etc, how come their big TPS and FPS titles do not feature keyboard and mouse support? There will always be a silly fanboy that will come out with "boo hoo, if they want to use a keyboard and a mouse then they should go game on a PC." Take a moment to really think about the mass appeal having extra yet simple peripherals that can OPTIONALLY be used on games that the PC gamer market would flock at. Have you ever played a TPS and FPS on a PC and to an extent mastered it? The accuracy is amazing, and the gameplay remains solid. Now there are also many that would still use a controller for Gears of War and Uncharted 2. It is also true that PC gaming fans would be very likely to make the transition into the consoles just because their most used peripherals are also there.

The true console purists/fanboys would complain about keyboard mouse users having an "advantage." There is such a thing as a compromise you know. For example, implementing something in settings, where the host can choose to have the option of not allowing keyboard/mouse players in that gamve and vice-versa. If I am a console purist, what do I care if there is a keyboard mouse user playing on another server which I wouldn't enter because of that factor? Some games feature custom weapons, people don't join those (KZ2), so this is the same comparisson.

Truth is, many console purists don't look at the bigger picture and M$ as well as Sony have fallen into that trap. Nintendo on the other hand didn't care if the "super hardcore" gamer would be angry at the ADDITION of a motion control to the system (YES for those ignorant, you can still play games on the Wii the "regular" way). Nintendo experimented in an attempt to appeal to more than 1 market and has clearly won. M$ and Sony have the opportunity of grabbing another group of gamers, it's just up to them if they want to take a small "risk" (nowhere near the big risk Nintendo took) to tap into that market that IW/Activision clearly abandoned when they took off longstanding features from their "great" game.

P.S. I know Unreal Tournament 3 has kb/m support but that's it.

Make games, not war (that goes for ridiculous fanboys)

I may be the next Maelstorm or not, you be the judge http://videogamesgrow.blogspot.com/  hopefully I can be more of an asset than a fanboy to VGC hehe.

and you already answered your own question.  kb/m support is there (at least on ps3 i'm not sure about the 360) but just like the balance board, motion plus, natal, the sony motion thingy,six-axis, ect....it's up to the developers to build games that utilize it.

I think more titles could support K&M but I think they feel there is no need. Plenty of PC gamers (or potential PC gamers) are steadily moving to consoles without K&M. The big issue is ergonomics - most consoles are under a TV in front of a sofa or chair, hardly a good spot for a K&M.

I probably still play more FPS on PC with Valve titles, and I have UT3, but I've found it easier to get the hang of a controller (still not as good!) rather than go to the trouble of putting a table, etc. in place so I could use a K&M to play.

It's a good thought, but I think the bigger market they want to start fighting for is the one currently flocking to the Wii, hence Natal and The Wand.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

PC gamers largely want to be PC gamers and most of them (me included) seem to feel that consoles are hurting more than helping PC gaming. I for one don't want to play console games on my PC or PC games on my console, neither is suited for it.

It's not a big enough market people wanting to use KB/M, sure for this post people are going to reply "well I do!" for the next 30 posts not realizing they are the fast minority. Even on UT3 that has KB/M support on PS3 I think they said somewhere like 0.3% of users use it. Developers don't even have to implement it, just enable it to. KB/M on PS3 is standard with any generic usb KB/M, the software to handle it is already encoded. You can use a KB/M outside of games. Besides, you can buy adapters so you can use KB/M on PS3 games, vast minority who actually want it will do that.

True, but Unreal 3 is the only one known to support those. Btw, I have a nice setup of a lazychair with a kb/m where my arms are nice and rested (don't ask how I managed that rofl). Plus there are also decent alternatives to keyboard mouse such as the FragFX. It is still somewhat flawed (not by alot though, it works fairly well), but if M$ and Sony would push or perfect a good design like that one, it would be amazing for the TPS/FPS fans considering those big selling games for PS3/360 this gen (KZ2, MW2, GeoW1,2, etc).

Obviously I am not saying that this market should be their focus but it cannot be ignored considering they already have the elements that are already familiar to PC gamers such as web browsing, some kb/m support on a lesser extent. Also the PS3 seems to have a slight advantage as it would support peripherals from different makers (using a 500gb hard drive from a laptop is just win).

Mummel, to a lesser extent I would have to respectfully disagree with you. Pretty much any FPS/TPS that has been out on a console would translate very well on a PC given its upgradeable horsepower. ONI on the PC was just as fun to me as it was on the PS2 back then. My suggestion is simply based on the fact that those 2 genres seem to be selling really well on both consoles. Also, Unreal 3 wasn't what you would consider a "heavy hitter" when compared to Haze (and yes, I personally think Haze.....didn't deliver....to use kind words), KZ2, Resistance series, etc. Another factor to look at, is the fact that big games like the Resistance series and KZ2 are not on the PC. Uncharted 1 and 2 with their TPS elements would also translate very well on PC with the kb/m support.
