Dunno why separate thread was made for each IGN GOTY. I would have liked to comment on all the IGN GOTYs in one thread. Oh well since I'm most interested in Uncharted 2 I'll do it here.
Great win, but seriously was there any doubt. I think this game is going to get a very high number of PS3 GOTYs (perhaps 100%? Though I hope it shares the love a bit with some other top titles on PS3 like KZ2 and Batman AA; KZ2 especially needs some props to help its sales a bit, MW2 sales shows there's a solid FPS market out there on the PS3 and KZ2 seems to deserve more attention from that crowd). It should also take top honours across all platforms in a good number of GOTYs, hopefully a majority of all platform GOTYs, but at least a plurality. I really hope the GOTY trophy cabinet this game will get translates into a good sales boost. What's been the history of post GOTY sales performances for titles that have sold less than amazingly by the time of the GOTYs (i.e. less than 5 million). Uncharted 2 has impressive sales, but not amazing sales. As an aside I do think PS3 exclusive titles need showcasing more-so than the exclusive titles on the other consoles. It seems the PS3 exclusives don't capture the attention of PS3 owners to the extent that Wii and 360 exclusives do. For this reason I personally hope KZ2 and Uncharted 2 make a clean sweep between them of the PS3 GOTYs
360: With people saying they think MW2 is a real contender I was kinda surprised at AC2 taking it out. Good job Ubisoft! They seem to have used the source material that didn't get stellar reviews (i.e. the original AC) and really took it up a few notches. A lot like Uncharted 2 really. I'm thinking Uncharted 3 and AC 3 might just be releasing in the same year and fighting it out for another GOTY award. Can Ubisoft take the crown and win GOTY awards on 2 platforms pushing Uncharted into second place? In the 360 AC 2 was up against a slightly weaker field than PS3, but still some strong titles there. FM3 deserved the nomination, while the 3rd game in the franchise as the second iteration on the 360 it seems to have also seen a massive improvement over it's first 360 showing. MW2 had to be there, but I don't see it winning any GOTYs on either platform. Batman AA fans probably have the most justification for feeling hard done by with AC2's win. I get the feeling that the 360 GOTYs will be a bun fight between AC2 and Batman AA. Batman AA deserves a great deal of kudos for being a new IP (of an old favourite it must be acknowledged) that seems to be a really excellent launching pad for more great titles to come. The reboot Batman has received in movies and games recently has breathed new life into a comic book favourite that has suffered for decades in general entertainment media by being played more as the camp crusader rather than the caped crusader. SF IV, I believe it was generally well received, but when pitted against the big 4 in the rest of the 360 list it seems out of place, kinda like the person you reluctantly bring along just to make up the numbers. People have said that the 360 was a bit short on quality games this year, but I'm sure there were other titles that could have got a look in. While the first 4 games listed will probably all appear in every 360 GOTY the 5th game probably won't always be SF IV. Only 1 shooter in the list too. Anyone gonna try to call the 360 the shooterbox now? No, I didn't think so. Better diversity in this list than the PS3 quite frankly, which is to 360's credit.
Wii: That was a great list of titles, except for Guitar Hero 5. More of a place holder than SF IV for the 360 IMO. But in other ways it really added to the diversity of the list. No 2 games remotely alike on this list. (IMO AC2 and Batman AA are similar enough (in overall genre category, not in any specific way) that the Wii list wins the diversity award). Great to see. So glad a platformer won a GOTY, even though Mario isn't my guy. I am firmly a Ratchet, Jak and [original] Crash person when it comes to my platforming tastes (and Abe, who can ever forget Abe...just brilliant...ahh memories of the PS1 come flooding back. Damnit I need to go get an Xbox so I can play the 2 Oddworld games released on that console). But I digress. The other great thing about this list is that niche titles got a real look in. Madworld at less than 500K sales worldwide (looks like Majin's gonna lose his sig unfortunately). But if you go by review scores this list is the weakest of the 3; none of the titles appears to be an AAA, if AAA means 9+/10 average review scores. It would seem there is very little chance of a Wii title winning an all platforms GOTY this year.
I'm not terribly interested in Handhelds so I won't talk about DS or PSP. I'll leave that to others. Any of the games on these platforms likely to threaten the Home console titles for overall GOTY?
Seems to me the the grand champion GOTY awards in general this year will be between PS3 exclusive(s?) and a couple of HD multiplatform titles.
Did IGN do an overall GOTY?
