Forums - Nintendo - why do people/game journelists keep calling mario a casual game?

A better example would probably be the GTA games, easy to get into and anyone can just pick up and play. But difficult to master/complete with all the missions and extras.

I agree... Mario is casual like GTA, but hardcore games enjoy them too.

Mario is quite casual, I remember my mom and one of my aunts used to stay up all night playing SMB 2 and 3 and Duck Hunt. Why is it so bad that someone calls it casual (or calls a shovel a shovel)?
It attracts both casual and "hardcore" gamers and that equals a lot more sales. And that's a good thing, right? So what's with the complaining over this?

gee man your making me sound like i despise casuals lol.. im happy nintendo is expanding the audience.. i just though casual games are something like wii sports and thats it, i didnt know thats the definition of casual lol,

That was not my intention! I gathered from the OP that you were an open minded fellow who simply wanted some input on whether or not people view Mario games as casual! Some do, some don't. The part about calling a shovel a shovel was directed at some of the folks who seem to take offence when others call Mario games casual when there really is no reason to! In my opinion anyways...

They need to belittle its popularity somehow.

Because they don't know what is casual/mature...just as some hd fanboys.

I think defintions are really being mixed-up in this thread. Why does everybody suddenly insist on defining every single game on it's hardcore or casual-appeal?

Gamers can be defined as "casual" or "hardcore" so I think we can agree that there are games that appeal (mostly) to hardcore or casual gamers. Still I don't think that this is just a black and white story. Not every gamer can be defined as hardcore or casual. Most of us are probably somewhere in between.'

People also seem to be confusing successful games with casual games. Just because lot's of people have been playing Mario games years back does not make the franchise casual. Things are just not that easy.

There are many explanations: Mario was very successful, heavily marketed, accessible... (and I also disagree that being accessible is enough to qualify a game as casual...). Modern Warfare 2 is extremely successful yet I doubt it is a casual game appealing to people which have not been gamers traditionally.

For me casual gamers have (recently) (re)entered the video game market with intuitive products such as Wii or DS and online games in the recent years. They don't spent as much money or time on video games as "hardcore" or active gamers do.

From this point of view, NSMB Wii appeals to both groups: it is a title you can easily pick up and play with your family or on your own. It is also a title which appeals to long standing fans of the franchise.

Anyways... like I said before... people, especially editors and analysts seem to feel the necessity to classify every single game as either hardcore or casual and more specifically tend to label 98% of all Wii games as casual without really thinking about who is actually playing the game.

Oh and btw... I think people calling GTA a casual game is a great example of the general confusion about labelling games as casual or hardcore. I am not saying that I have the one correct answer to the debate. But from my point of view GTA is clearly a game designed for and appealing to hardcore gamers as I can't picture moms, grandpa's or some other folks enjoying Dr. Kawashima's brain training picking up GTA and blasting their way through liberty city.

Mario is like casual shoes...everyone has worn it at least once in their life...or have at least seen a pair.

That's about as likely as me playing by somebody elses rules, which I would never do. I only play by my own rules, nobody elses...not even my own.

I despise the terms "hardcore" and "casual" in reference to video games. Talk about the two most overused words in gaming today.....

                          GETTIN' CHRONOCRUNK

I can remember a time when 'casual' games were called ARCADE GAMES.

Those were the days.

Nov 2016 - NES outsells PS1 (JP)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

Unfortunatelly many people call it casual because it is a successfull brand on the Wii.....

You'll see how ModNation Racers will be a "racing title" but Mario Kart Wii will still being a casual title.

* Casual games = Everyone plays.

* Hardcore games = Only hardcore games plays.

going by that, what game is hardcore? that just goes to my belief that there is no such thing as a hardcore game.
