2 things that might be eternal, mario and FF

The most amazing thing about the series, coming from one of its biggest fans, is that they literally re-invent themselves for every new installment. New world, new characters, new story, new enemies, new battle system, new EVERYTHING. They are extremely brilliant and creative. This is why they can branch out from a game like Final Fantasy VII, or X, or XIII, and create an entire series based on one of the installments. In the world of Final Fantasy, we also have our constants: Chocobo's, Summons, Moogles, etc., which give all of the games some form of commonality (if that's even a word). It is truly the best video game series every, and with FFXIII around the corner, I'm sure I'm not the only one this excited. @Darth - I never knew it was the second biggest franchise. What's the first? Pokemon? Mario? |
I wouldn't call slight and progressive variations "completely reinventing themselves".

parasite eve is going to be so awesome, i can't wait, i hope they also revive vagrant story as well at least the mainn FF series has maintained it's quality to some extent, it makes me sad when i think abotut FF:CC it went from being really really good to being rubbish very quickly (hope the latest one fixes this problem) |
Vagrant Story revival would be great, I would really like to play as Ashely once more xD Plus, I liked it's conception of the world of Ivalice, it's the best one so far ;)
FF:CC tried to get away from the FF formula too much, and they ended up doing the same mistakes that they did with Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. Both were good games, but since they were too distant from the concept of what Final Fantasy really means, they became too generic.

If Final Fantasy only has slight variations, then every other RPG series just repackages itself.
I wouldn't say Final Fantasy re-invents itself, but it's one of the only series that changes every installment. They don't stick to a single formula and are more than willing to change things up.
@Akvod
I think that Outlawauron answered this in the best fashion, but i'll ask something of you then.
Tell me two final fantasy games that had only slight variations and then name them please, if you may.

Practically every new concept you see in JRPG's get their start somehow in the FF series. The battle system itself has gone through an extremely huge change from game to game. The last big change being FFXII which was completely different from any other game in the series and was one of the best JRPG's ever created.

This is true.
This is your opinion.
But, hey I'm the one defending you here.
i hope FF last foreverrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!. is the best franchise in the world!!!!!!!. FF FTW!!!.
Hopefully the next FF won't take nearly half a generation to come out
That's about as likely as me playing by somebody elses rules, which I would never do. I only play by my own rules, nobody elses...not even my own.
