The most amazing thing about the series, coming from one of its biggest fans, is that they literally re-invent themselves for every new installment. New world, new characters, new story, new enemies, new battle system, new EVERYTHING. They are extremely brilliant and creative. This is why they can branch out from a game like Final Fantasy VII, or X, or XIII, and create an entire series based on one of the installments.
In the world of Final Fantasy, we also have our constants: Chocobo's, Summons, Moogles, etc., which give all of the games some form of commonality (if that's even a word).
It is truly the best video game series every, and with FFXIII around the corner, I'm sure I'm not the only one this excited.
@Darth - I never knew it was the second biggest franchise. What's the first? Pokemon? Mario? |
I wouldn't call slight and progressive variations "completely reinventing themselves".

If Final Fantasy only has slight variations, then every other RPG series just repackages itself.
I wouldn't say Final Fantasy re-invents itself, but it's one of the only series that changes every installment. They don't stick to a single formula and are more than willing to change things up.

Practically every new concept you see in JRPG's get their start somehow in the FF series. The battle system itself has gone through an extremely huge change from game to game. The last big change being FFXII which was completely different from any other game in the series and was one of the best JRPG's ever created.
