Forums - Sales - Halo: Reach will likely sell over 7 million it's first NPD

I say 3.5 million first month 8 million WW. Games usually launching on the same system in the same gen get lower sales then the first one. There are of course exceptions with games that greatly improve such as Uncharted.

And, ironically, Halo.  Go figure.

Sales on original Xbox:  Halo 2 > Halo

Then Halo 3 > Halo 2

I think it is very very likely that Reach will outsell Halo 3 because this is a new storyline.  For the first time in 8 years someone who has never played a Halo game can play one without having to worry about missing out on the previous story of the first iterations.

Not to mention from the looks of it, this Halo will appeal to a lot more than just the normal Halo crowd.  To this day I still have friends getting 360's and buying and playing Halo for the first time.  If Halo 3's legs are any measure, I'd say Halo: Reach will be the biggest opening and top selling Halo yet.

I don't think it will launch as big as the 360 version of MW2. ODST has probably damaged the series by being released at full price.

We'll see.

Let me ask a question. Why is ODST and issue about being released at full price while MW2 hasnt been.  From what I understand of MW2 (Havent finished the campaign yet) the length is just about the same length as MW2.  Isnt multiplayer in MW2 basically the same as MW1.  Halo ODST added Firefight (totally awesome).  The campaign is fully co-op while MW2 has some special co-op stages.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

You are correct.  I really couldn't tell any differences between MW 1 and 2 other than new campaign levels.  Then again, I only played MW 1 for around 10 hours, so I don't really remember much about it.

The only argument people can have is that by halo standards, odst is an expansion. By 90% of other game standards, its a massive game. This whole "length of a game" is such bullshit anyways. You can pay 69.99 for Wolfenstien and get an average single player experience and a terrible multiplayer experience or you can get ODST and get an amazing single player experience and an even better multiplayer. Who cares that Wolfenstien is a "longer" game on paper...

What have I said about MW2? I think a lot of people are dissapointed by MW2, and that will hurt the CoD series and it's legs. It's the exact same thing with ODST. A lot of people were burned by it, and that hurts the series.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

@Demotruk

well that can be said about MW1 as well. People complained that the campaign was short. Dont get me wrong I enjoyed MW1 and MW2, but cant say that they provide more value than ODST or say I wont get MW3 because the first two were short.

7 mil may be hard to obtain through NPD only, but I could definitely see a 5-7 mil first week release. Halo 3: ODST easily went over 2 million and it was slammed super hard by critics and fans alike for being "too short" or "just an expansion." Halo Reach is a full on Halo game set with multiple spartans. Halo Reach is also MS's "money" game next year, something that ODST was not. Fans of the Halo series (and there's over 10 million of us) know that this game will be well worth playing. The Halo series has dominated XBL usage time for years and there is no reason to suspect that will change. Also, expect massive amounts of adverts for this game; perhaps even more than Halo 3 itself. I predict that within 12 months of release, this game will have the highest sales (LTD) on the Xbox console period.

Well personally, i still think the Halo brand when it comes to America and on the 360 is bigger than that of Call of Duty. Even though Call of Duty had a huge opener on the 360, Halo is still the brand attached to the Xbox name and most of the fans on the system. It's the equivalent of Mario on the system.

However, 7 million in one month is quite a bit. I never openly state something as impossible unless it's obvious, but this seems like kind of a stretch. Also that it isn't going to be seen as a direct sequel or mainline game, that means it is going to take a much larger and more active marketing campaign. I think MS will definitely have the money injected into it to make it huge, but if it is effective or not will depend on how they do it. That HALO Reach beta though is a good start.

So US only, no chance in hell.

Unless MS want to blow $500 million on ads.

Depends WHEN in the Month is launches.

If it launches the first week, it's possible...

Knowing the nature of the beast, the game will sell something like 70% of its total sales withing the first week or something, so the same launch date as Halo 3/ Halo ODST should be good enough.

Halo 3 would have sold around 30% of it's total sales first week ...
