You really have trouble differentiating between opinion and cold hard fact, don't you? I think the majority of the board would disagree with your sentiment (and his for that matter). If you compare ME to Baldur's Gate (among the most beloved PC games of all time) you'll find that ME is... not that exceptional to most who have been doing this for a while.

I liked Dragon Age as well but I feel that its a step down from Neverwinter Nights II so I also believe that Bioware have lost a little something along the way (and I don't like their "consoleification" of their games either, makes the PC versions less than they could be, as is the case with ME).

Now that's not entirely fair.

NWN2 was Obsidian, and they're better than BioWare

I'd like to hear an argument for that.

They've done only two games so far.  KotOR 2 was basically a copy/paste of most of KotOR 1's cast and plot.  NWN2 was basically more of the same which, while nothing to complain about, is nothing to really brag about either.  A lot of what NWN2 offered was being offered in the NWN PRC and then some.  So far all Obsidian has demonstrated is the ability to follow in Bioware's footsteps.  I'm fine with that.  If they're going to be Bioware Jr. then I wish them the best because Bioware makes great games.  In fact, the game industry could use a few more Bioware clones.

However, I don't see anything in their current portfolio to suggest that they're better than Bioware.

When I was playing KOTOR 2, I thought it was a direct sequel, didn't even know it was made by a different developer until long after I had finished it, totally a copy/paste, not necessarily in cast/plot like you said, but in tone, gameplay mechanics, and gameplay experience.

@Kenryoku_Maxis, SW:TOR looks awesome! I'm pretty pumped for it too, I just hope it has more focus on group play than it seems thus far.

As for the OT, I thought this thread was going to be essentially asking people who like boths JRPGs and WRPGs equally for their opinion. At least, that's what the title is about. If you're biased either way, then you probably don't have much to say here right?

As for me, ME2 hands down. I love JRPGs and WRPGs pretty equally, but they are different experiences generally. ME2 and FFXIII and Halo:Reach are the only 3 games on my 100% must-buy list for 2010 (I have to sift through all the other amazing games, can't afford to buy them all!), and I know ME will be amazing.

FF is too hit-or-miss for me to really be all that confident in. That, and I get a "this game might be a lot like FFVIII" vibe whenever I see pictures or watch a video of FFXIII (and that's a very bad thing to me).

Then again, I might be ME-biased, since ME is probably my favorite game within the last 5 years or so. Even with its flaws the gameplay experience was incredible for me. I guess for me it comes down to brand trust. I know I'll love each and every game Bioware puts out. I do not feel the same for SE.

Have you seen the videos for Mass Effect and Alpha Protocol? Compare them please, especially if you've played the first Mass Effect and seen the work they've done on it graphically, gameplay-wise and fixed the glitches from the last game.

I have! I'm more excited by the Alpha Protocol videos because the writing seems better.

I agree somewhat with your last phrase, JRPG's haven't had the impact that they had in past years.

But to say that they lost creativity is not entirely accurate as well, you just need to take a look at what Demon's Souls, Lost Odyssey and The World Ends With You to see that there's still creativity and originality in them.

Demon Souls is considered by some to be a Japanese made WRPG. I will be picking that one up soon enough when I have the time to finish it because that game is going to be a pain in the ass I hear lol.

Well, even if it does have some WRPG mechanics, it has tons more JRPG mechanics to it (And no, don't say that turn based is a JRPG mechanic, since KH is there to destroy that reasoning).

Demon's Souls is the equivalent of the Battletoads of RPG's in terms of difficulty ;)

What makes Demon Souls like  JRPG to you as far as mechanics are concerned?

Well, it's action style is more fitting of the King's Field and Granstream Saga games, plus you can feel a bit of a touch of japanese action games rather than WRPG mechanics (No WRPG has mechanics and battle systems even remotely closer to Demon's Souls)

Weapon development is on par to the weapon development in some JRPG games like the Parasite Eve series

Character development is were it's more heavy WRPG focused

Story is neither, to me it's Story flow doesn't fit in any category.

On the flip side, I'm not getting at all hyped for FFXIII. Out of every FF game yet, it seems to be the most which is taking the most from previous games, as well as other RPGs made before it. Out of all the trailers, gameplay videos and information I have seen for the game, I have yet to see one original gameplay concept, setting concept or even plot point that strikes me as original in any way. Its almost as if this game, more than any FF game before it, is just a hodgepodge of past movie, RPG and Final Fantasy concepts mashed together into one massive big budget game. And that's not interesting me in the least. I can name 10 RPGs I'm looking forward to, and FFXIII just isn't on the list, despite its huge production values and namesake.

enlighten me! wat has ME done new?

Clealy you didn't read the rest of my post, where I said I hadn't played Mass Effect.  Or that I was more interested in other RPGs (both WRPG and JRPG) which looked to be doing more interesting/innovative things.

Six upcoming games you should look into:
