Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why FPS so popular??

I never understood why certain jrpg are popular among many people. Many seem slow with the take turn attack style. You just choose an attack then watch an animation of your character doing it. Not enough interaction. Most are way to long and I lose interest in them.

In America it makes total sense for FPS to be popular. The USA is one of the most War oriented countries ever. We literally dont go more than a couple decades without a good military battle somewhere. But we are a young country. All of our Wars have been fought with guns. We highlight violence in tv and movies and downplay sex. It is our culture.

The culture I don't understand is Japans and often Europe. They seem so alien to me when I watch advertising commercials for the ps3 in both countries.

Japan seems to be set in fantasy. Using past folklore, or ambitious visions of the future. They still rely on its country history just like the USA does. Except theirs involves hand to hand combat and sword fighting rather than guns. Japan does not have a winning past when using guns

Europe is way to mixed to try to even put my finger on any culture their as each country is its own. Similar in many ways to the USA and at the same time different also. As violence is downplayed more compared to Sex in movies and tv.

I never get why we downplayed sex.  Sex is suppose to be a big part of human nature yet the media treats it like it is taboo.

FPSs are popular because they are easy to play and also due to the immersion factor.  A few also tell some really good stories when they try i.e. BioShock

Its not like we only play FPS.  There's even research that shows that teens(my age group) play various different genres.

Probably because as far as anyone can remember lads have always played games involving guns or violence at some point in their lives, like as kids you'd play action man or have toy guns or you could go back further when lads use to play cow boys and indians. i just think this is the way our generation of kids (and big kids :) ) get to play there "gun/ action games"

It's the natural progression of the shooter genre which has been driven mainly by ever increasingly realistic graphics and online for the past 17 years.

Trends. A few gens ago it was platformers. Then it was RPGs. People will move on to something else eventually.

Quem disse que a boca é tua?

Qual é, Dadinho...?

Dadinho é o caralho! Meu nome agora é Zé Pequeno!

I am guessing action adventure games are next.

Around the Network

1. Multiplayer
2. Heavily casual genre

The online multiplayer is the main hook of the genre.

This, and because they are insanly fun!

Because they are for kids. I mean I liked FPSs alot when i was younger... Not anymore. I like the older FPSs better now than before thanks to the crappy new FPSs these days that feel too slow paced for my liking. But anyway the main audience for FPS are aged around 8 and up... So FPs= more famous cuz of kids :D

Exactly. Unreal and Quake and Doom and others much faster paced than today's shooters.
