So true.  I'm tired of 360 fans trying to do some weird play on words and logic to say that PS3 and Wii got a price drop, while 360 didn't.  "But they really didn't.  They just phased out the Pro and replaced it with the Elite."  Uh, did the Elite just drop $100?  Yes, nuff said.

Also, why is it that VGC have it, as well as several analysts predicted it, the PS3 outsold 360 by a few thousand?  But NPD has it that 360 outsold it by ~100k, and they are the right ones?  How can VGC and the others be off by so much?  I know that several companies, including Wal-mart, don't even release monthly sales numbers, so it's basically an estimation on everyone's part.  So how can everyone see it one way, while only one source sees it the other, and that one source is the accurate one.  And I also know that NPD has been around for awhile, but back then everyone gave out their sales figures.  That's something that has changed of late, so now they have to estimate what it would be.  I just can't quite understand how they come up with their numbers, and how their method is supposed to be much better than others.

I guess this confusion stems partly from the weekly charts here.  I believe the only week 360 outsold PS3 significantly was the week of the Wal-mart gift card, and that wasn't by 100k.  But these numbers are supposed to include BF, too.  According to the charts here,  PS3 outsold 360 by ~100k.  If anyone has some insight on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

are you sure about that. All they really did was repackage the SKU's

Arcade model November 2008 price $199

Pro model (primary SKU) 2008 price $299

Elite model 2008 price $399 (I believe less than 10 % of xboxes sold were this SKU)

Price points November 2009

Arcade model $199

Elite model (now the primary SKU) $299 (bigger HDD, but now without any HD cables whatsoever)

Modern Warfare 2 bundle $399

So the price cut is an illusion, unless you are easily manipulated by marketing.

But is the Pro around anymore? Uh, no?  And the Elite is identical to the Pro? Uh, yes?  Therefore it was no more a price drop than when the 80GB PS3 took over the 40GB PS3 place at $400 and the 160GB PS3 came at $500.

The only difference in this situation is that they kept the Elite nomenclature to, as I said, discretely increase the value without actually having to do anything.  It was actually very smart of them to do it this way because everyone knew that the "Elite" was the best 360 and so it would be better to drop the Pro name.

So there are excuses to downplay 360 sales to beef up PS3 in perspective. Though the discussion that all my PS2 owning friends owned a minimum of 3. Either from break downs or upgrades to slim. So what do we play down PS2 120 million divide by 3 and come up with 40 million as a practical user base? yeah I didn't think so.

This is the worst generation ever for excuses to up play X and down play Y.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

the Only People Saying PS3 Lost Steam are the Same people who have been saying this since last September , 360 picked up steam and had a LOT of great Deals , and NA Has always been 360s Spot , Both console are doing Great .

Did Xbox 360 outsell Ps3 according to Vgchartz numbers?
Also, I wonder when these journalist start to look worldwide and not america only.

Well to be honest the only territory that really matters is the US and perhaps the other english speaking countries - UK, canada, and AU.  The rest of the world is too fragmented.  Northern Europe and mainland asia are PC-centric, and Japan is handheld land.

The PS2 has sold 460.000 in Norway alone. Eastern Europe is also a huge market late into the generation, especially Poland and Lithuania. Germany, France, Spain and the Netherlands are also markets to be contended with and besides Korea (I swear this is where Blizzard gets half their money from) and central parts of China people are quite fond of home consoles as well as PC's in Asia.

Its quite a strange thing to say that only English speaking territories matter since the majority of console and game sales happen outside of these territories (390 million people in the UK, US and Australia put together versus 5.7 billion who don't live in those regions). Yes, US and UK markets are big and important but not bigger or more important than the rest of the world.

Wow, way to prove my point about the fans playing with words and logic to make it seem the 360 is doing better because it didn't have a price cut.  Facts are facts.  The Elite dropped by $100, making their top of the line SKU $299 instead of $399.  That in all forms of the phrase is a price cut.

Seeing the somewhat unimpressive sales of last week ww I think its hard to imagine the PS3 topping one million in one week this holiday season, even with FFXIII on the steps in Japan. Japan is simply too small a market for a big enough impact and there's really no huge reason why it would move in the zounds in Eu/Others region on top of that.
The NA situation is interesting though, the PS3 is managing something no one thought it ever would simply by way of good bundles; keeping up with the 360 in its supremely best territory (3-4 k off is not exactly a huge lead when we're talking 200k + numbers).

It all depends on whether or not PS3 sales can rebound in Americas after the post-BF week drop.  This week's (Americas + Others) PS3 sales come in at 86.6% of what 360 did last year.  That percentage needs to be higher for the week in question because if we apply that percentage against 360 2008 for FFXIII week, (Americas + Others) would come in at 744.2k which would require 255.8k in Japan to make a million.

Kind of a bad week for guessing an appropriate multiplier, though, because of the extremes of the Black Friday swings.  Next week will give a clearer picture.

funny how it says modded 360 got blocked so people went out to get new ones.

what about all the people who are fat owners who are getting slim ps3s as a second ps3?

i know i fit this group.

If facts are facts, why are you ignoring mine?  I'm not denying there was a price cut, but it is in the same form as when the PS3 80GB took over the 40GB at $400.  Only thing that happened was a HDD upgrade which the Pro was scheduled to get anyway.  I praise MS's intelligence at sneakily increasing the value without costing them a cent
