Forums - Nintendo - Matt Casamassina: Nintendo is Lazy!

I agree 100% with Matt. I basically only have my Wii for two reasons, Nintendos own REAL games like Mario, Metroid & Zelda, and then for VC. Otherwise theres little reason for me to own a Wii.

Oh, btw, remember I asked you why are two Todas such a big deal and why is NPC a bad idea? You didn't really answer any of that, did you?

Because it isnt a big deal. The article wasnt even about it. Cmon, i know youre smarter than this! You just messing with me, arent you? I thought you were joking with this question!

yes it was. Those were 2 of the examples he used of nintendo being lazy. For wii music, animal crossing and wii play he kinda has a point but everything else is just stupid.

NPC wasn't lazy since it wasn't done in replacement of other products. It was done in addition to other products.

the main problem is that that he examines them in isolation. NSMBW has 2 characters that are the same just with different colours. Well in halo all the characters in multiplayer are the same just with different colours. I guess microsoft is lazy too. What about Buzz on PS3, that could have had much better textures, clearly sony is lazy too. Whilst we are on the subject, MW2's single player can be beaten in under 5 hours. I guess activision are lazy as well. No, this is not laziness. This is the companies knowing that its not worth doing because the vast majority of the games fans will not care.

Finally I found this passage to be quite insulting

And really, why should Nintendo try when its strategy not only pays off by the millions but goes largely unquestioned by the fans, some of whom vehemently defend the company's every move. I've heard all the excuses. The primitive graphics of the Wii Sports series are intentional and therefore it's all right. Sure, the characters are limbless, lack fluid animation, geometry and texturing, but the game is supposed to look simple. It's supposed to be accessible, not daunting. And hey, everything's really crisp and it runs at a great framerate. Give Nintendo a pass. And so what if New Super Mario Bros. Wii plays and looks like the DS title before it? Who cares if the game's graphics aren't dazzling? It's fun, isn't it? That's what matters.

the parts in italic are made to look like idiotic fanboy excuses trying to defend their company of choice. But this is EXACTLY my point of view. they arnt excuses they are how I feel. As a gamer i care not how much effort nintendo puts into games but how much i enjoy them. Often they go hand in hand. lack of effort in AC hampers my enjoyment. Lots of effort into prime 3 increases my enjoyment. But a lack of textures or limbs in wii sports does not effect the enjoyment I get from a game. The effort they went into providing the hidden depth in wii sports resort  gives me a much better game than the effort of going through giving all the miis arms and legs. Likewise, with NSMBW he again focuses on the the minimal graphics. To me.giving us 10 suits instead of 6.5 would be a much better improvement than putting the graphics up to galaxy level. Is this a bad thing?

I agree with most of what you said, but I wouldn't call Wii Music lazy. It missed some things, sure, and was not exactly what everyone wanted, but I don't think it was lazy. Wii play is kind of hard since it's not supposed to be a "full game", just as Link's crossbow training I guess, but yeah, it's not as polished. Now, in AC there's more of a point.

Look, we´re done with argumentation.

Nintendo situation is terrible... for gamers.

For people that play games only in holydays, maybe its the dream machine.

But for us? Regular gamers? Anyone that says its totally happy with it is lying.

Nintendo really needs a kick in the balls to get its game straight

Really now.

You don't see how people can have divergent sets of quality metrics that allows them to just like th Wii library more? Not at all?

I want you to take a good look at my current-gen collection. I own a fair chunk of 360 games, especially given that I haven't owned my (particular) 360 for as long as I have my Wii (though me and my brother co-owned a 360 since only a little after it came out, I chose not to count the titles we owned together in my collection). I have played some good HD games this year, including Arkham Asylum, and have done my part to participate in the whole HD phenomenon as best I can without actually owning an HD TV.

Buuuut

If somebody put a gun to my head and made me choose one of my systems over the other, I would choose the Wii in a heartbeat 100% of the time. If I had to take it as my sole gaming platform, I could be satisfied with its library. My average games-per-console in a given generation is about 35 for my primary gaming platform, and the Wii is more than on track to meet that number and eventually exceed it - unless the DS and the 30 take away from that, but even then it would be beside the point because I know right now what games I would get. As a consumer I'm perfectly happy with that state of affairs.

Tell me how that makes me a liar.

Nintendo fans are blinded by Nintendo's laziness. All the real gamers grew out of Nintendo since they are kiddy and don't feed your story/graphics/audio needs. Oh, and the Wii doesn't even play DVDs.

My wife took a picture of me in my Mario hat and made it my avatar on Twitter. Would you feel I was riffing on you if I used it as my VGChartz avatar?

In a celebration of developer laziness, you see

It's kind of odd that Matt calls out Nintendo yet he's never written any articles attacking Ubisoft, EA, Activision or any third party that has been guilty of flooding the Wii with Shovelware. Why do these companies get a free pass? Until Matt becomes an adult and calls out third parties for their laziness, he's always going to a whiny punk in my eyes.

I could care less about what he has to say.

Well put. To my count, Nintendo has released one bad game for the Wii -- DK Barrell Blast.

That's Activision's or Ubisoft's montly output (EA is about every two months because they try things, they just try the wrong thing). Or Zoo's or Detineer's weekly output.

Malstrom wrote an interesting blog post about Matt's meltdown and I think he's right when he says that the sales of NSMB Wii were the cause of it. It's just too much for some folks that a game so backwards as NSMB Wii can be a bigger hit than the well crafted titles like Galaxy.

Matt's crying about NSMBWii is one of the most bizarre things about this. The graphics? Really?

He keeps harping on one of the most impeccable, well-crafted, perfectly balaced platformers ever made, the heart and soul of the genre given flesh and cloth, and expects to be taken seriously as a voice of the hardcore?

If 9 million people think like this, then there are about 50 million others who think otherwise. But of course, your slice of the pie is right, because judging if a game is good is not about how much fun you have, as those stupid 50 million people would tell you, no.

Those 50 million wii owners dont mean 50 million people that think about the game industry. Most of them are just people that play it on christmas when the family is around.

The people that think and say something about the game industry... well, these people can see a bleak future.

Oh, btw, remember I asked you why are two Todas such a big deal and why is NPC a bad idea? You didn't really answer any of that, did you?

No, I wasn't joking, know why? Just read my first post in this topic. ALL it addressed was how his complaint about the Two Toads and NPC made no sense. And yet you called me a blind fanboy for that. How can I be a blind fanboy when I defend something you actually think is right? So even if Nintendo is right, the simple fact of stating so makes you a dellusional Nintendo lover?

And this "99% of Nintendo owners are casuals" is backed by no evidense and makes no sense. Think about it. Compare the sales of Nintendo's main, "core", franchises to those on GC. Sure, feel free to discard Mario Kart. My point is, I believe Wii has at least as many "true gamers" as you'd put as GC had. I'd bet it actually has more, but still, that represents dozens of millions, doesn't it?

Edited: Also, take VGChartz Wii owners community as a sample. These are "core" gamers that could be considered well informed, and then of course it's the internet so hyperbole and whyning are higher than normal. Point is, you'll see that stating that most "core" Wii owners do think like you is not so right.

Man, im out. You weghting too much on stuff dosent even put against what i think

I dont think 99% of wii owners are casuals. I think 99% of wii library is made of horrible casual games that alienated the user base

I dont hate wii sports. I hate poorly made wii sports clones.

Im done here. Next topic. Or at least next time this same discussion dosent take the bizzarro path
