I'm on the other end of the spectrum. The battle system was the only good thing about the game.
The pacing was horrid and enemies went from ridiculously easy to WTF (approaching 4d world).

Wth happenened to Fayt, Maria and the other girl's (sophia or something) powers. They were hyped so much and rarely used for anything not even to defeat the final boss, not as battle skills, absolutely nothing. At least the last girl got them into 4d, thats about it. Fayt took down the vendeeni ship by accident and never used his power again. Maria's was only ever used as a "demo". To surmise, the story was horribly underwhelming and the endings were even worse.

All together, I expected more but was disappointed. The only fun thing was souping up to battle the secret bosses especially freya. Even that was more trouble than it should've been because the battle system wasn't well done thanks to terrible AI. Battles were still fun though when they weren't frustrating.

I can respect very good points but let me clarify few things...The 3 powers actually were used in game Fayt = Etehreal Blast, Maria power was about inhancemen hence status altering magic.. Sophita was dimension pass hence her spells the open portals to demon world... but overall your right they wernt used for much and pacing was bad I definitely agree. let me guess u lved AI stats all up to 10 huh?

Oh yea, since there are some Tri-Ace fans around, how is Radiata Stories?
It looks interesting, but the reason I really want to try is Iwadare Noriyuki

very sloe start off and pretty boring at 1st gets better later on but overall its good not spectacular though

I thought the story was ok, but I am not sure that I liked the plot twist at the end. I found the game to be boring for some reason, though. Finishing it was a chore for me.

Ethereal blast looked a lot different from what he used to take down the vendeeni ship but if thats the case, its ok. However, you dont get that skill till after the game so it still wasnt necessary to beat lucifer.

Yup I levelled everything and everyone to max (255 if I remember correctly was the max lvl) and had to rely on the uber-fayt strategy to defeat freya anyway cos the dumb AI kept running into ether srtike even when I placed sophia especially at the corner of the battle area. Fayt had 5000 defense through buffs so I just used him to solo freya. This is also why I appreciate gambits in FF12 while most hate them. IDK if they would prefer AI like in SOTET.

I wasnt takin bout LV...on the status screen there are 4 stats: HP MP ATTACK DEFENSE they can be lved up 10 but.. HP increase the Max HP u can get ( lv1 9999, lv 10 99999) MP is same as HP( Lv 1 999, LV 10 9999) ATTACK is NOT higher attack power its how aggressive the AI is at LV 10 they will use specials and attack relentlessly regardless of HP they have left, DEFENSE is how Defensive they are at LV 10 they wont use specials at low HP, they wont attack and avoid enimies - your NOT suppose to have ATTACK and DEFENSE BOTH AT 10....it makes the AI dumb as hell

The Good

  • The Medieval setting was the only interesting part of the story.
  • Nel was hot.
  • I remember seeing an option to turn off voices. More RPGs should have this.

Neutral

  • Battle system was fun, but got old and was frustrating at times.

The Bad

  • Story was dull, apart from the Medieval thing I mentioned before. I don't know what the hell happened after that. It was filled with stupid, random events like saving the flower girl, was cliche and had poor pacing. And don't get me started on the horrific plot twist. SO3 failed to keep me entertained.
  • Dialogue was awful, and there was way too much of it. I wouldn't mind a lot of the dialogue, if you know, the story was good. Also the dialogue/voice would take a while to load. Fayt says something, and three seconds later, Cliff says something. Rinse and repeat.
  • Terrible and annoying voice acting like Sophia for example. Also why are the voices so low? Not low as in a deep voice, but as in I could barely hear them at all.
  • Characters are dull and shallow. There's nothing interesting about them, and what kind of name is Fayt Leingod?
  • Unbalance difficulty from dungeon to dungeon. One dungeon would be easy to beat, but the next would be hard. The one after that would be easy, and repeat.
  • Party member's AI are retarded. They would heal you when you're about to die. By the time they cast the healing spell, you're already dead. Also they would rush to an enemy's attacks.
  • Commands were practically the same: "Don't hold back" "Fight with all your might," etc. For the longest time, I couldn't find a heal/support command.
  • This is a small complaint, but I swear to God 95% of the treasure chests contained berries. Very, very few of them contained something good. Before I opened them, I would say to myself, "I bet this contains a berry," and whala, it was. I actually played the drinking shot game for this. If a chest contains a berry, take a shot. I wondered if I should even bother opening another chest.
  • Enemies were annoying. They would mostly shield or counterattack your attack with paralysis attack when their fury was full. Also fat guy was annoying with his constant "My money!" or "I hate you."
  • Backtracking was horrible.
  • The item inventing thing was confusing. I tried to figure out how this thing works, but I never could. Most of the time, I created weapons weaker than the ones I had.
  • You can die if your MP drops to 0. Fuck you to whoever thought this was a good thing.
  • Music: The rockish, dungeon crawling tunes felt so out of place.

There's probably a whole lot more I forgot to mention, but I just hated the story, the cast was uninspiring and the AI was awful.

God, I just spent like 45 minutes pressing x just to get killed and load back? -.-
I hate that in RPGs...

"And yet, I've realized that maybe living a "decent" life means you won't ever have a "good" life."

This thread gave me the motivation to retry Star Ocean 3. I love how this game gives the option to turn off voices, I really dislike how so many of today's RPG's are heavy on voice work and cutscenes, I really enjoy the simpler times from the SNES and PSX.

Lets talk about Star Ocean: Till The End Of Time. I feel this was a fantastic game with an amazing storyline and an awesome battle system. My problem is that many people feel that Star Ocean 3 has a bad story and I just don't understand that. What was so bad about it? I understand the voice work in SO3 was pretty damn bad but I don't think it took away from the epicness of the storyline. I also feel that the "certain plot twist" that happened in SO3 was one of the most surprising and original plot twists I've ever seen in a jrpg. What are your thoughts about this?

I thought the story was definatly the worst ever to grace a game. I did not think the "twist" was original, to me it felt like the heavy hand of an author who could not for the life of him figure out something sane, logical or interesting to do next. Totally turned off from any SO game from now on due to TtEoT. When I was playing the game, I kept expecting and hoping for something epic... instead it was bleh..then meh... then "ok wtf, was this story just totally pulled of some kids fanzine story he posted on 2ch or something?"

If you like it, great.... I do not recommend most people to subject themselves to it......

I would go into more detail, but the wording you used in your post seemed to indicate a desire to keep it spoiler free for those who might still play it.

Amazing storyline?

Holy shit! they gave me a fake copy of SO3 because the story in mine sucked BAD.

Everything else is awesome, though. If you don't count VA.

Edit: Mirson, Medieval the only interesting part of the game? it killed the whole atmosphere. I bought it for space adventures, not to be stuck in the dark ages.
