Forums - PC Discussion - ISP problems with MW2 (I told you so)

I received a letter from time-warner cable which I would type out but it would take me 20 minutes. the letter basically says that they think I have a virus thats sending/receiving information.”when computers that are connected to the network become infected with viruses and other intrusions, serious problems can arise, such as degradation of network performance and he infection of other users” It directs to link for virus removal. I can assure you I do not have a virus as I did a fresh install of windows 7 the day before mw2 came out. I dont open any emails, and really the only thing I do on that computer is play games. Its my gaming computer, I use my laptop for everything else and I know 100% I do not have a virus nor have I had.

They say “We ask you to bear in mind that continued violations of the road runner acceptable use policy can result in suspension or even termination of your road runner account”

This is complete and utter bull crap. Thanks Infinity Ward/Activision for nearly getting my internet shutoff. Im done with this game.

I got a call from my ISP saying this:

Dear Customer

It has come to our attention that you are running servers on your home connection.
While this is not allowed, we inform you that measurements can be taken when continuos usage.
We regret to inform you that hosting servers at your home connection is not allowed, we have special packages for server connections.

Now this is translated from my native language, I had to call up my ISP and tell them the problem.

This is a serious problem, IW is just using your computer to host the games.
I work as a network admin myself and had to explain myself to my ISP why this is happening.
Most of the times i’m leaving games that i’m hosting because i don’t want my connection to be used as gameserver.
IW fails to see that UPnP and a open NAT is dangerous to your network.

Yeah now peoples internet bills are coming in, everyone is getting things like this. My friend got stuck with a $40 addition to his internet bill. Hes since deleted his game and wont touch it again because its not hardly worth that type of expense

i’ve already gotten a mail from my isp telling me they are reducing my 20 meg line to dial up speed for the next month for “excessive file sharing through peer to peer connections” and i will be cut off if i persist.

tried telling them that its a pc game thats causing it, their reply is pc games do not use p2p

None of those are my work, I'm guessing the sources will be deleted soon, IW people don't liek the truth that their IWNet idea was utter shit.

all i can say is "wow".
Are ISP companies really this misinformed?

It takes all kinds, I guess, but really, who is the culprit here? I think we all know the answer to that.

Good job Activision! If Blizzard wasn't part of your slimy corporation, I would not care if you were gone tomorrow.

Go, Bobby, go!

What's misinformed about it?

They don't want people using massive amounts of bandwith by hosting shit.

It's a IW that was uninformed.

I mean there is a reason why pretty much all dedicated servers for most games are purchased from buisnesses and not run from the home.

oh man, if i got charged an additional $40 on my internet bill i'd be quite pissed off. if this is really wide spread i imagine a lawsuit will come out of this.

Hopefully it will. Activision deserves it.

One of the letters said "PC games don't use p2p". That has been false for a few years now.

But yeah, I agree. IW is at fault, as I was trying to imply.

It hasn't been false. PC games haven't used P2P until now.

This may have been answered in another thread, but why wouldn't Xbox Live users get in the same predicament?

Well... Borderlands does.

Though Borderlands is a 4 person affair.  Not exactly the kind of bandwith that will cause you to run afoul anti-server bandwith deals like 18 player would.
