I never played Silent Hill, but Alan Wake looks to be very good.

It's totally different in the fact that everything in the game is going to be fun AND scary, not just scary. Gameplay looks a whole lot more involved.
And they're also differently culturally (western & japanese.)

seriously, that what we all thought ... 1 year ago.
Sure, the setting is similar "fog+lost town" and there are some "zombie creature" AND a "psychological driven" story but that is all.
Alan Wake is much more AND much less.
The gameplay does seem more reactive, less "broken" but it is also a less scary and more fast paced. This is not a survival horror as we know them. This is more a thriller action game with some classical horror settings.
NEVERTHLESS, if they succeed to restrict the number of ammo they may succeed to give you a "survival feeling" ...
NOTE : RE4 is a very bad survival horror game but, it is ALSO a VERY good action game ...
