Forums - Microsoft - Thinking of getting Forza 3 for my big brother for christmas

What you need to know before replying to this thread is that my brother is a massive PC-gamer. He played consoles (and PC) along with me when we were kids, but somewhere down the line we seperated gaming paths, and now I almost exclusively play consoles and he almost exclusively plays PC.

Still, when I decided to get a 360 about 21 months ago, he got a bit excited and bought Mass Effect, Burnout: Paradise and Dead or Alive 4. We played maybe 2 matches in Dead or Alive 4 and then neither of us have touched it again (not because it's bad, just because ... well, we didn't). I don't know how much he played Burnout: Paradise but it can't have been that much. He was noticably upset that it had no local multiplayer. He completed Mass Effect, but lamented over the controls and got the PC version once it was released and re-completed it there, and will be getting Mass Effect 2 on the PC.

He's tried out some of the games I've gotten, like Gears of War, GTA4 and Lost Odyssey, but usually, if there's a PC version he opts for that instead, even if it means having to wait (which I don't blame him for, atleast not when it comes to shooters). Anyway, he said a while back that he'll be playing FF13 when I get it because we both played the hell out of FF7-10.

Another thing about my brother is that he is a massive racing fan. I'm not sure what racing games he likes the best, but I remember him saying a lot of good things about the Need For Speed Underground series and, most notably, Grid. He also told me that he wasn't very fond of Gran Turismo.

So my question is, do you think that Forza 3 is fitting for someone who isn't very used to holding a game controller anymore? Will it match up at all to the experience he's had with Grid on PC? Also, does it have local multiplayer?

I never play racing games (except Mario Kart) so I have no idea where to even look for info like this, so I'm asking you, my fellow VGChartz users, to steer me in the right direction.

Here is a thought.

I never liked racing sims much. Even games like Grid didn't hold my attention for long. However I saw the official Microsoft 360 steering wheel for 60 bucks on sale and picked it up.

I never gave racing sims a fair shake so I blindly bought Forza 3, since I commited to the genre with this wheel.

Its mindblowing! Forza 3 is the only game I've been playing lately. I bought it 2 weeks ago and have already raced over 1000 miles in the game. The feedback of the wheel and the feel is just amazing.

Even if you don't have a steering wheel, the game is excellent. The career structure is the best I've ever seen and modding and upgrading cars is very easy due to quick upgrade. I'm currently racing a Camaro that I own in real life against Ferraris, Bugattis and Zondas due to being able to upgrade it easily.

So I would say that you and your brotehr may get a good 8 hours of enjoyment if you play with a controller as the game is stellar. But with a wheel, it will become an addiction.

Just speaking from my experiences :)

Well if he likes GriD and doesn't like Gran Turismo then it sounds like he prefers more arcadey racers.

Maybe try DiRT 2. It's made by the people who did GRiD, reviewed very well and it's on PC soooo...

Try Forza 3. It is very flexible. Rewind feature, auto breaking, breaking lines, on/off damage...etc.  It can be an more arcade-ey racer if you want it to be but you have to set it up like that. It is mainly a sim...you will need to use the brake :)

There is a demo out there.

Yeah I second Okey, get him Burnout Revenge!

same thig here forza is the only racing game i like

Well, if he plays racing games with a racing wheel on his PC, we won't want to play Forza with a regular controller.

But if he for some reason plays those racers with his keyboard, he'll love playing Forza 3 with the Xbox controller.

Thanks for the input guys.

I decided to get it for him. I looked up that Microsoft racing wheel thing, but it was a bit too steep for me to get. But I'll be getting Forza 3 for him and hoping for the best.

@Slimebeast, he plays with a keyboard so I'm sure he'll manage with a controller.

Well, being a huge racing and automobile fan myself, Forza 3 is currently the best racing experience you can get on consoles, but it's far from an Arcade game, even if you tone it down to a more simple level ;)

It has tons of room for expansion, even if you start out at the simplest level, as you'll gain experience in departments that you couldn't gain in arcade racers like Grid our Burnout. It all comes down to your brother preferences, which seems to more into those kind of games.

I hope your brother enjoys the game and that he doesn't give up if he faces attrition in the game, it will be worth the struggle for him if he carries on with the game.

That being said, I need to get back into the game, to finish Season 6 properly XD
