3D versions of rock concerts will rock.

3D concerts are for pussies. It defeats the whole point of being at a concert. That's why only crappy disney "musicians" do them (JB and HM/MC)

Also, will someone explain the difference between this "new" 3D and the 3D in Avatar that I just saw last week? I know the difference between the Red-and-blue ones and the "digital 3D" with the tinted sunglasses (like Avatar). What is the difference?

Im not sure if you still waiting for an answer but here it is: the 3D you watch in cinema is called polarised 3D. You have 2 lenses that are polarise to leave only certain light particle pass through. Each lens will let only pass the light segment that go with their polarisation. Its a very cheap method of displaying 3D but the problems is that it lowers the overall quality of the screen by reducing contrast and sharpness.

Now the other method is called shutter glass (its not a new method tho), you have 2 LCD panels, one in front of each eye. The panels will then close in succession to the other fast enough that you cant see them flickering. Its more expensive but produce a real high def image, it does not affect the quality in anyway.

Sony was suppose to use polarise glasses at first (CE08), but they wasnt satisfied with the quality and moved to LCD shutter glasses. Its harder to work on this because you need a constant framerate of 120 hz, if not it will be possible to notice the flickering of your LCD panel and this induce headache. If you have any other question feel free to ask, I already had 3D at home 10 years ago.

So a global Electronics manufacturer should stop competing with other global Electronics manufacturers?. It's what you're saying. Sony are a huge conglomerate which contains dozens of companies. The playstation business makes up about 8% of Sony.

How on Earth did you come to the conclusion that that is what I was saying? Really, I want to know what I said that could make you draw that conclusion. I say that it's good that someone is innovating (while conceeding that the company that innovated has had a few unsuccessful years with one of its products), and you turn it into that? Good grief!

Did you not say it might not be wise for Sony to make big moves or not?. Sony are a global electronics maker they're always making big moves. Sonys losses on the ps3 were irrelevent in regards Sony as a whole. It's the strength of yen, weak economy that hurt them.

About 3d.

Sony, Discovery Channel, Imax Launching First 3D TV Network

With 3D television front-and-center this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Sony Corp., Imax Corp., and Discovery Communications Jan. 5 said they had formed a joint venture aimed at launching the first 24-hour 3D television network.

While no launch date for the unnamed network was announced, executives said the venture would target the 5 million early adopter homes that typically gravitate toward new technologies such as 3D televisions, projectors and enhanced glasses, which all will be on display this week at CES.

The Consumer Electronics Association said it expects manufacturers to sell 2.2 million 3D TV units in 2010, with 25% of all TVs capable of 3D broadcasts by 2013.

While traditional anaglyph 3D technology requiring two-toned paper glasses has been around since the 1950s, recent 3D theatrical releases use special screens, projectors and enhanced glasses.

“3D is the future of high definition and most important development since HD, and we think it will ignite a new upgrade cycle in consumer devices. From cameras, projectors and Blu-ray players to televisions, consumers will be driven to purchase 3D,” Sony chairman and CEO Howard Stringer said in a media call. “It’s an opportunity for content creators to develop a new form of creativity and create a new experience for customers.”http://www.homemediamagazine.com/3-d/sony-discovery-channel-imax-launching-first-3d-tv-network-18001

Ahem! It said it might not seem wise. That little word changes the meaning of the sentence completely.

To use 3D you need a TV (like the OPs) that takes 120+hz from source.  If your current tv does 120/240 make sure it does this from source (and not an internal upscale) for this tech to work.

I think this is a great idea.  The leader in sports here in the US, ESPN, is lauching 3D broadcast on June 11th for the World Cup

With the cable stations following suite, its very possible this tech will take off.

This is just standard business for them, preparing for the next technological advancements. Sony probably spend $10billion a year staying on the cutting edge and designing the next iteration of tv's, cameras, batteries, ps4, stereo's, amp's, mobile phones, camcorders,  dslr's etc etc. Panasonic etc are also releasing 3d tv's.

Not necessarily.

DLP TVs (and plasmas that support 3D) use a checkerboard pixel pattern which allow them to take 60 Hz and display images in 3D. And they do this much better than few 120 hz LCD monitors since there is no ghosting lag.

There isn't a 120 HZ "TV" that is able to do this on the market right now. There is a bunch of LCD monitors, 2 samsung plasmas and the Mitsubishi DLP/Laser TV line... and thats it.

All of the people that bought the "120/240 hz TV" have been douped!

It isn't just sony. All the major TV manufacturers are pushing 3dtvs and it's not as expensive to make a tv 3d ready as we're lead to believe.

Thank you Lordy.

So why are so many people claiming sony will fail?

Because they are trolls.

Mention sony (or another company) in a thread and without even knowing what the hell the topic is about they automatically attack the company with clueless comments.

When they realise their error it is a steady retreat to save face, pretending they know what they are talking about.

Yup thats right. Theres only a very few TVs out there that support 3D. Most 120 Hz are not 3D ready. While its true that you can display on 60 Hz (ive been doing that for along time on my cathodic Tv). You will see flickers and small image duplication (also call ghosting) which have been the biggest problem for 3D as a home media. Hopefully Sony will fix that with a constant 120 Hz, and will show the way for some kind of standard in displaying 3D (checkerboard, vertical or horizontal interlace etc).

Stop Dooming it off the back, Maybe it won't fail, The PS3 is not doing to bad. Sony has always led the industry in introducing new products, Walkman, bata max ( first vcr) cd played , portable cd player, camcorder, soo many, dvd player in PS2, Most things do well, some don't, atleast they are a company trying to make better products for our home. Be more positive, this could be a great leap in home technology.

Tomorrow's the big day. I wonder if the OLED TVs Sony and LG will be presenting are also 3D ready. Could mean great things for that technology.

PS3 Will Be King By 2016.
