Forums - Microsoft - Best Buy: 360 Elite + 42" Plasma + Avatar game = $700 O.O

Here is my 2 cents on plasma. Burn in used to be a real problem with plasmas but it has come along way. With new plasmas, as long as you baby it (keep the contrast to about 50% and try to watch full screen hd stuff) for the first 100-150 hrs. of use, the worst you would get is an image retention. It looks like burn in but it goes away. Most if not all newer plasmas will have a feature that shifts the pixels slightly so that static images won't be retained. I imagine that burn in has really hurt the sales of plasmas over the years, it's just one of those things that sounds so bad, kinda like RROD. Earlier this year I decided that I was going to get an HDTV but wasn't completely sold on one technology so I did a decent amount of internet research. I went with plasma because just about everywhere I looked, it seemed like it was common knowledge that plasmas offer better picture quality. More accurate colors, better blacks for contrast, less motion blur and just overall more realistic images. Sounded good to me since I didn't plan on using my panel for just gaming or a computer monitor. I was thinking sports, movies and gaming. I can say that after 8 months my 46" Panny 1080 plasma is the shit, I swear viewing some content just looks incredible especially Blu-Ray. As far as why there are so many LCDs in Best Buy, I think it has something to do with the way LCDs are manufactured vs. plasma and there being more of a profit to be made with LCD.
This best buy deal is a good one indeed, especially for someone looking to break into the HDTV world. Like someone else said the TV alone is $600 which is a decent value to begin with. Hell even if you didn't want the 360 you could sell it and have a new TV.
To anyone who may be thinking of getting a plasma but is unsure of the technology, just do a little research and if you want, PM me and I'll give some links.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.

Doh I was checking the Best Buy site to compare and it turns out they don't even list anymore any 40" LCD TV with 720p.
All their LCDs are 1080p...

They still have a bunch of 720p plasma though.
Could it be that making 1080p is cheaper in LCD than Plasma ???

If you want to get the TV, get the TV. It's your money and you can do what the hell you want with it. Why try so hard defending yourself.

Yes, 720 HD TVs are being phased out and and google any reliable electronics site and you will find plasma uses a lot more electricity.

The EU are even considering a bill to outlaw plasma TV due to the energy consumption.
That's another reason most manufactuers are playing it cool on plasma.

LOL

I've made 3 (now 4) posts in this thread.

1. Posted the link and said great deal.

2. Said generic comment about Plasma TVs not really having a ghosting issue anymore. Someone else said they still do on low end models and I didn't reply because I don't really know if this model does or does not. However, I did say that overall LCD is better than plasma.

3. Said its only a $350 TV in the end, so that's a great deal regardless of Plasma vs LCD or 720p.

How is that tyring so hard to defend myself?

As for the rest of your post, thank you for allowing me to spend my money my way. I have had the same 32" Wide Screen CRT 480i TV for the last 5+ years. So, a $350 42" 720p plasma is a BIG jump up for a very small cost. i.e. GREAT DEAL!

Plus, this thread just shows how little many of you actually understand HD and resolution settings.

1. At 42", its quite difficult to tell the difference between a 720p signal and 1080p. You really need 46"+ to begin to see improvements.

2. ITS A F'ING BRAND NEW 42" HD TV FOR ONLY $350 FOR CHRISTS SAKE!

3. Most or your precious HD games or in 720p or less native. lol.

As for the EU, I'm not there, so I don't give an F. I guarantee you this plasma uses a lot less energy than my CRT. Net gain for me eitherway.

lol...Im glad you posted this.

I may drive down to Buffalo for this and few other things.

It depends as much of the distance at which you are viewing the Tv as off the size of the TV......

Eww it's 720P?

*vomits*

I guess there are like 5 PS3 games for you to play... My suggestion is to get a gaming PC, you'll cope better.

Tease.

Do plasma TVs still have that ghosting issue? I really haven't kept up with TVs in awhile.

Do you mean glare? Then yes, plasma's are the TV's you wanna stay away from if that room gets a bunch of lighting.  OT, not exactly the "BOOM" deal PS3 has at Best Buy, but it's certainly nice to see they're finally doing an indepedent deal from BF for 360 as well.  Now for Wal-Mart to have a PS3 deal to keep fans from shaking their fists.

They are

A. Burn in's still occur. It usually happen within the first week or month or something like that. If you put the brightness up. To reduce the chances of burn ins you should watch it during the "break in" period with the brightness a little lower.

B. People arent going to walkin a best buy and see a 360 tv deal and ps3 tv deal then decide. These deals are probably selling to people who know what they want already and best buy is just trying to win their business over other retailers.

sry i don't want to be rude but point A is bullshit. i had my plasma for 2 months and no burn ins you guys only read articles on the internet right. its my gaming tv so i do alot of gaming and no signs of burn ins. picture qaulity is better than LCD in terms of realism but LCD looks more colorful like purple showing as almost blue in color thats why people wsay LCD>plasma when in realism plasma>LCD. i have a 42 inch panasonic plasma and 42 inch LG LCD so i can compare both.

So much ignorance on this thread posted by people who have obviously never owned a plasma. As some other more informed people have posted, the difference between 720p and 1080p on a 42" screen at normal viewing distance is minimal (ie. you won't notice). What you are more likely to notice is motion blur on an LCD. I've read reports about the perceived resolution of LCDs and plasmas when handling motion and the LCD's suffer from this much more than plasmas. Surely everyone who has seen an LCD can vouch for this as well. They are getting better with higher refresh rates but still can't compare to plasmas. Also, LCDs can't compare to plasmas for black level and contrast and therefore all colours look better on a decent plasma. Go to any AV site and see what the enthusiasts consider the better option for giving the best picture: it isn't LCD. Before anyone asks, I also own an lcd monitor for my computer so I know the pros and cons of both.

Don't want to be rude but... read what I said "reduce the chances" there is always a chance to get them... just turns out you were lucky. Do you play any games and just leave the game on the same picture for a couple of hours? I doubt it.

no i don't keep the same picture for hours on my plasma ussaully 15 mins mx but 3 or 4 times for 30-45 mins. same thing with my LG LCD why would i turn my plasma on and put a picture or pause in halo for 1-2 hours 15-30 mins is it then i ussaully continue to play or close my xbox and plasma.

see... To get burn ins you usually need to keep the same picture on for a reasonably long time with the brightness setting normal - high during the break in period. 3 things. It'll be hard to get a burn in on your tv now after the break in with not having the same picture on your screen for extended period of time.

Have you ever played a ps3 and see it dim after 5 minutes of inactivity?
