oh god, robots are going to take over the world in 2012!!!

The Japanese have doomed us all !

2012 is real ! (except the reason for the end of the world is robots, not some natural disaster)

The first one is very impressive, I've seen it in several documentaries, the level of programming detail that went into it must be astonishing.

The second one is creepy because of how realistic it looks.

The third one is quite basic I thought, I think I could have built it with that kind of function. However, that was it's secondary purpose; It's primary purpose is as a piece of concept art, which it probably works very well as (I know nothing about art).


But the thing is, no matter how intelligent or realistic each of these robots look, you have to remember that their intelligence is an illusion. They don't really have any, all they are is a series of pre-programmed movements. Nothing more nothing less.

It's all well and good to pre programme robots for manufacturing and high accuracy engineering. But for real progress we should start developing robots that can begin to think for themselves.

If you look at the work of Dr Kevin Warwick at Reading University he has done some very interesting projects. One of the most recent was a robot who's CPU consisted of brain cells from rats. That's the kind of future robotics needs, robots that can learn for themselves.
